Ex-Spurs scout has some concerns with Guglielmo Vicario but still feels he is the best option in goal Tottenham have got
Tottenham Hotspur have already started the new campaign well with three wins and two draws in their opening six games.
Under Thomas Frank, the Lilywhites are looking resolute and compact. The defence, unlikely last season, has looked solid and dependable. Centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are showing signs of getting back their mojo, with full-backs Pedro Porro and Djed Spence performing their tasks well.
Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has also had a good start to the 2025/26 season. He has been a part of the backline that has kept four clean sheets in all competitions. The Italy international spent several months on the sidelines last season following a foot fracture, and after returning to fitness, he could not perform as consistently as he would’ve liked to.

Bryan King has concerns over Guglielmo Vicario at Tottenham
Vicario’s tenure at Tottenham since joining from Empoli in the summer of 2023 has been full of ups and downs. He has not been a reliable figure in between the sticks, struggling majorly with his decision-making from set-pieces and regular crosses. Lately, the 28-year-old has lately been underperforming in a Spurs shirt.
The Tottenham No.1 made a blunder in his team’s 2-2 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion, failing to get a strong hand to prevent Yasin Ayari’s swerving strike from finding the back of the net. Vicario was also at fault in Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend, parrying an effort straight against Joao Palhinha following a corner, which allowed defender Santiago Bueno to poke home for the visitors’ opener.
It was another poor decision-making from the experienced shot-stopper as he failed to push the ball out for a corner or into a safe zone following the initial tame flick on from a corner kick. Vicario has revealed that he wants to compensate for last season’s disaster but his action have been found wanting of late.
Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King feels Vicario has enough credit in his bank and currently remains the best option to continue as the No.1 at White Hart Lane. However, he does have issues over his handling and decision-making from crosses in the box.
“I think he (Vicario) has made more good saves than he has errors, that’s for sure,” Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News.
“Spurs have got three ‘keepers, and neither of the other two are going to win them anything. Vicario has proved himself in the past. He’s made crucial saves in the early stages of games to keep his team in them.
“Where I worry about him sometimes is when high balls come into the box, he tends to allow himself to be boxed in. But then again, there’s nobody at that football club who is better than him.”

Vicario has to eradicate mistakes from his game
Indeed, Vicario has enough credit in his bank as every player has started with a clean slate under new boss Thomas Frank. Overall, he has had a strong start to the season and made some terrific saves to help the Lilywhites win points. However, that the Italian’s status as a first-choice goalkeeper will be called into question if he continues to make errors.
The ex-Empoli star must improve significantly with his judgement and decision-making from set-plays and corners. If he does not and it continues to cost Tottenham points, Frank will not hesitate to give Antonin Kinsky a run in the starting XI.
