Reliable journalist claims Rodrigo Bentancur is close to signing a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur
It comes as no surprise that Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing midfield reinforcements in 2026. They have reportedly shown an interest in signing Real Madrid star Federico Valverde.
Besides bolstering their midfield options, Spurs also have a few players whose contracts are expiring at the end of the season. And one of them is Rodrigo Bentancur. The central midfielder has just 11 months left on his contract and will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with other clubs once the January transfer window opens.
The Uruguayan international has been a consistent fixture for Tottenham this season, starting four of their six Premier League games. He has quickly become an important player in new boss Thomas Frank’s system, forming a strong partnership with summer signing Joao Palhinha in the double pivot.

It is surprising that Spurs have delayed so much to offer Rodrigo Bentancur a new contract, despite knowing his quality, experience and importance to the club. However, there is now a positive update on his new contract.
According to Football London journalist Alasdair Gold, Bentancur is close to agreeing to a contract extension that will keep him at the club beyond 2026.
It was reported earlier this month that Spurs CEO Vinai Venkatesham has been tasked with tying down the Uruguayan to a new deal. Thomas Frank had already made it clear that the 28-year-old is a key part of his plans and wants the north London club to secure his future as soon as possible.
Having arrived at Tottenham from Juventus in January 2021, the South American has racked up 121 appearances for the club, scoring nine times and laying on eight assists. That is despite him suffering an ACL injury that kept him sidelined for nine months in 2023. Bentancur was a key part of Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs side that won the Europa League trophy in May, featuring in 13 of 15 games in the competition.
Going by the latest update delivered by Alasdair Gold, it appears Venkatesham has succeeded in making Bentancur agree conditions to a new deal and continue his career at White Hart Lane.
A right move?
The fact that the Lilywhites did not show urgency in tying Bentancur down to fresh terms despite his dwindling contract suggests that they were relatively confident that he will commit his future to the club. The midfielder is now close to agreeing a new deal, which should come as a blow for Atletico Madrid, who were plotting a potential move on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Frank wants the Uruguay star to be a part of his plans moving forward, and Spurs have obliged. Now, we wait for the official confirmation.
