Tottenham Hotspur delivered some exciting signings for new boss Thomas Frank to work with in the past summer transfer window. The acquisitions of Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons and Joao Palhinha prove how attractive a destination Spurs have become in recent years.

Interestingly, the north Londoners were also interested in signing Real Madrid star Rodrygo Goes in the summer. The Brazilian forward’s future at Real Madrid was hanging in the balance all summer. It very much looked like his time at Santiago Bernabeu was coming to an end, with Real Madrid having decided to listen to loan offers.

Tottenham were prepared to sign Rodrygo on loan from Real Madrid and cover his entre hefty salary for a season. In the end, however, a move did not materialise and the 24-year-old decided to stay in Madrid. It remains to be seen whether the Lilywhites would return for the Brazilian next year, but as per recent developments, they are planning to raid Real Madrid for a different player.

Tottenham eye move for Real Madrid star Federico Valverde

According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Tottenham have made the signing of Real Madrid star Federico Valverde as a ‘priority’, with Thomas Frank keen to add ‘muscle’ and ‘talent’ to his midfield unit. Spurs are willing to splash big to sign the midfielder, and the Premier League represents an appealing destination for the Uruguayan international due to its pace, power and intensity.

Federico Valverde has been a key part of Los Blancos’ success in recent years, but has fallen down the pecking order under Xabi Alonso, who took over from Carlos Ancelotti in the summer. He is not seemingly willing to play at right-back and his influence in midfield has reduced, leading to the La Liga club looking for his potential departure. The 27-year-old had a torrid time in Real’s recent 5-2 derby embarrassment at the hands of Atletico Madrid, failing to influence the game in any manner.

The aforementioned report adds that Tottenham are offering the central midfielder from South America a ‘central role’ in their ambitious project. Valverde is presently focused on Real but he is wary his continued presence at the club under Alonso is not guaranteed, which means the Montevideo-born talent’s future at Santiago Bernabeu remains at crossroads.

Tottenham’s midfield restructuring

Spurs signed Joao Palhinha on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich in the summer, and the defensive midfielder has made a massive difference to the team. Rodrigo Bentancur has also performed well but his future remains uncertain as he has entered the final 10 months of his contract. So has Yves Bissouma, who does not feature in Frank’s plans and is expected to depart next year.

As such, the north Londoners are expected to be active in the market for midfield reinforcements in 2026. They are monitoring Valverde’s situation in the Spanish capital as part of their long-term midfield planning, with the South American star fitting the mould of the kind of dynamic player Frank wants in N17.

Versatile, technically sharp and tactically astute, Valverde’s high work rate, tenacity and composure in duels make him a strong option for a Spurs side looking to add more energy and flexibility to the engine room. The Uruguayan is a winner, leader and warrior, attributes the Europa League winners are precisely seeking as they aim to build a challenging and resilient squad under Frank.

However, it will not be easy for Tottenham to convince Real to sell Valverde, even after his slow start to the season. If the Hotspur Way chiefs are fully invested in Frank’s project, they must do everything possible to bring Valverde to the club in 2026. It remains to be seen how the situation develops.
