Tottenham eyeing Dortmund star, Jurgen Klopp rated him ahead of Mohamed Salah

Tottenham Hotspur could battle Newcastle United and Aston Villa for Borussia Dortmund star Julian Brandt in January

Tottenham Hotspur spent majority of the summer transfer window chasing a creative midfielder.

It was James Maddison’s ACL injury at the end of July that accelerated Spurs’ chase for a No.10. Thomas Frank’s side suffered blows in their pursuit of Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze, and it took until the final week of the transfer window to get a player in that position.

In Xavi Simons, they managed to bring in a creative player, but the north Londoners seemingly want more. Their creative struggles were evident in the recent 1-1 draw with rock-bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers. Tottenham failed to unlock the disciplined Wolves defence and it took a stoppage-time beauty from defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha to salvage a point at home last weekend.

Thus, it is not surprising that Tottenham are looking out for creative options ahead of the January transfer window.

Tottenham consider January swoop for Borussia Dortmund star

According to a report from German outlet WA, Tottenham are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund playmaker Julian Brandt. Aston Villa and Newcastle United are also interested in the player.

Julian Brandt has been a fantastic servant for Borussia Dortmund since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in 2019, racking up 47 goals and 68 assists in 272 appearances thus far. He has been in and out of the team since last season but was at his creative best in Dortmund’s 2-0 win over Mainz at the weekend, supplying two assists.

The Bundesliga club are yet to open talks with the 29-year-old over a new contract, despite the fact that his current deal is due to expire in 2026. This uncertainty has piqued interest from several Premier League clubs. The aforementioned report adds a winter move could be ‘financially attractive’ for Dortmund as it will help them get some fee. The Premier League offers great financial and sporting prospects, which could have an impact on Brandt’s decision as well.

Thomas Frank must push Tottenham to sign Julian Brandt

Julian Brandt would be an exciting signing for Spurs

Brandt has proven himself in the Bundesliga and Europe, and he now has clubs from the English top-flight sniffing around him. News of interest from Premier League rivals will certainly have the alarm bells ringing once again for Tottenham after missing out on summer targets. So, the Hotspur Way chiefs won’t want to see their pride take a hit in front of the sporting world once again.

Frank must build on the bright start his team has enjoyed and push the club to make some signings in the transfer window when it reopens in a few months. Despite signing Xavi and Kudus, the creativity issue still lingers and that is an area the Danish tactician must plan to solve. The north Londoners are seeking more offensive flair, movement, area penetration and experience- attributes they could find in Brandt.

The German was the preferred target for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool as he aimed to reinforce his attack in 2017. The Reds eventually landed Mohamed Salah, and they can have no regrets over how that panned out. But then the fact that Klopp rated Brandt so highly speaks volumes about his abilities at the top level.

Therefore, if there is an opportunity to sign a quality player like the Germany international in January, we should be all over it.
