Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Joao Palhinha has enjoyed a brilliant start to life at N17 under Thomas Frank
Summer signing Joao Palhinha has quickly established himself as one of Tottenham’s standout performers this season. The Portugal international has made the #6 position his own under Thomas Frank, delivering an instant impact from the moment he stepped into N17. At 30, Palhinha’s attributes fit seamlessly into Frank’s tactical setup, and his presence has already proven invaluable for the Lilywhites.
What has surprised many, however, is his unexpected goal-scoring form. Nine games into the season, Palhinha sits at the top of Spurs’ goal-scoring charts – an unlikely scenario for a player better known for his defensive qualities. His latest contribution came against Wolves last weekend, when he struck deep into stoppage time to snatch a vital draw for the North London club.

While his attacking output has added a new dimension to Tottenham’s game, it is still Palhinha’s defensive presence that makes him irreplaceable. His ability to dominate duels, recover possession, and shield the backline has made him a guaranteed starter. Without him, the drop in Spurs’ midfield quality is glaring.
Joao Palhinha is proving his worth at Tottenham this season
Palhinha’s failed move to Bayern Munich last year has turned out to be Tottenham’s gain. The midfielder has used his return to the Premier League to remind everyone why he is among the best in his position. And judging by his early performances, Spurs appear to have struck gold with their summer acquisition.
Ian Darke, however, still wants the 30-year-old to continue his good form and not take his foot off the pedal. Speaking to Tottenham News, Darke said,
“I think this is sort of this is a little bit of a freak period in Palhinha’s career in terms of goal scoring. He isn’t noted as a goal scorer, and it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise to me if he didn’t score again this season. But he’s getting himself into the scoring position. I think he’s nice and fresh and energetic.”
The iconic commentator added,
“He’s got a lot to prove. They already want to sign him permanently. I thought he was a good signing when he came in. There were reasons he wasn’t getting through at Bayern Munich. So I think he’s glad to be in the Premier League. He’s glad to be firing, and I think Spurs are mighty glad to have him in there.”
Ian Darke believes Joao Palhinha may be enjoying a short-lived purple patch in front of goal this season. But the iconic commentator has highlighted how the 30-year-old’s energy, experience, and leadership have revitalised Spurs’ midfield. While he still has a lot more to prove at N17, Darke acknowledged that early signs suggest Tottenham want to keep him beyond this season.
Reports indicate the Lilywhites are already preparing to make Palhinha’s move permanent after his impressive start at N17. Talks with Bayern Munich could begin as early as January, with the player himself keen to extend his stay at Hotspur Way. It is fair to say that the regular minutes under Thomas Frank have reignited the Portugal international’s career.
