Tottenham boss Thomas Frank reacts to Rodrigo Bentancur signing a new long-term contract
It was an open secret that contract talks were ongoing between Tottenham Hotspur and Rodrigo Bentancur, with reputed journalist Alasdair Gold revealing at the end of last month that the player was close to agreeing a new deal.
On Friday morning, Spurs announced that Rodrigo Bentancur has put pen to paper on a new long-term deal, although the length of the contract was not revealed. The midfielder had just 10 months left on his previous deal, sparking fears among supporters that he could potentially depart on a free transfer next summer, or strike a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January.
Those concerns have now been put to bed with the announcement of the Uruguayan international’s new deal, with Bentancur ideally committing his peak years to the north London club under Thomas Frank.

Bentancur shared why he chose to sign a new deal and extend his stay at White Hart Lane. The central midfielder wants to be a part of the exciting squad being built by Thomas Frank and win more trophies after tasting Europa League success last season.
Frank has given his reaction to the 28-year-old’s new contract news, praising the midfielder while highlighting what it says about the Spurs project. He emphasised the club’s vital need for renewal, placing it in the same category as skipper Cristian Romero’s recent contract extension.
“It is fantastic news that the Club has managed to extend Romero’s contract and now Bentancur’s contract,” Frank said ahead of Tottenham’s trip to Leeds United.
“I think that is a big sign that both of them believe in the project and the future here. Bentancur is a top player. He has been a top player for Tottenham. I think we can get even more out of him.”
Bentancur deserves this contract extension
Bentancur has been a consistent fixture for Spurs this season, quickly forging a strong partnership with Palhinha in the engine room. With his technical ability, experience and reading of the game, he has made himself one of the first names on Frank’s teamsheet.
Over the last couple of years, injury problems and off-field issues have limited the Uruguayan’s progress in N17. He has not managed to live up to the lofty expectations as a result, but under Frank, the ex-Juventus man seems to be regaining his mojo. As Atletico Madrid have been looming for his signature, Tottenham have done very well to secure Bentancur’s future. He deserved this contract extension!
