Defensive reinforcements under consideration as Tottenham Hotspur eye Mario Gila
Last season made it very clear that Tottenham need to step-up in terms of defensive reinforcements. Lack of quality backup options, and injury issues meant that Ange Postecoglou’s side remained leaky throughout the season. However, with Thomas Frank at the helm, managing the squad in terms of injuries mean the situation this term is quite better than what it was OTD last year.
Regardless, we can never be in a situation where we can so no to quality players, and that is why, Tottenham reignite their interest in SS Lazio’s Spanish centre-back Mario Gila as per TBR Football. The 25-year-old Barcelona-born, Real Madrid Academy Graduate has been of transfer interest to several Premier League clubs including Crystal Palace, Brighton, Everton, and obviously, the Lilywhites.
Gila has built a strong reputation in Serie A as a composed yet aggressive defender. His ability to step into midfield with the ball, combined with his aerial presence, makes him an appealing option for Frank. With Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven forming the main partnership at the back, Gila could offer the balance and stability needed to ensure Spurs do not suffer if injuries strike again.

Defensive Reinforcements!
Lazio are unlikely to sell cheaply this time around either, with the player under contract until 2027 (Transfermarkt) and valued highly by the Serie A side. Any deal would likely require a significant outlay.
For Spurs, the attraction lies not just in Gila’s current qualities but in his potential to grow further. Tottenham have been targeting players who can make an immediate impact but also hold long term value, and Gila fits that model. He has shown he can adapt quickly and could be moulded into a Premier League calibre defender under the right coaching.
Frank has already highlighted the need for his side to become more consistent defensively. Spurs have conceded goals in games where they were otherwise in control, and shoring up the back line is viewed as a priority. Adding someone like Gila would not just strengthen the starting XI options, but also create healthy competition in the squad.
January is never an easy market, but Spurs may feel it is necessary to act. With European qualification on the line and domestic competitions heating up, the depth of the squad could be the difference between a successful campaign and another frustrating near miss. Gila may not be the biggest name available, but his profile suggests he could be exactly what Spurs need at this stage.
