Manchester United legend Paul Scholes talks-up Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero
The influence of Cristian Romero at Tottenham continues to grow, and the recognition is now coming from some of football’s most respected voices. Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has joined the list of admirers, describing the Spurs captain as one of the most exciting defenders to watch in the Premier League right now.
Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Scholes said:
“I love Romero, me. I think he’s a nutcase, isn’t he? It’s brilliant. I love watching him.”
It is high praise from a player who built his own reputation on passion, control, and leadership. For Tottenham supporters, it will come as no surprise. Cuti has been immense since taking on the captain’s armband, setting the tone for a squad that has grown in confidence under Thomas Frank. What once looked like a fragile back line last season has become one of the team’s biggest strengths, with his blend of aggression and composure central to that transformation.
Well-earned praise!
Appointed captain following Son Heung-min’s departure in the summer, Romero has taken to the role like he was born for it. His partnership with Micky van de Ven keeps getting better, perfectly blending front-foot aggression with calm assurance on the ball. Spurs’ desire to build from the back needs players who are fearless under pressure, and few in the league handle that responsibility like Romero.
It comes as a huge boost to Tottenham’s ambition that the player recently put pen to paper on a new deal until 2029 (Transfermarkt). That says everything about how central he is to the long-term plan, even with Europe’s biggest names keeping a close watch.
His leadership has been massive during what’s been a period of change for the club. Thomas Frank’s system, although same to Postecoglou in terms of being possession-heavy, is very different. There’s a method to the madness now. Everything thrives on structure, intensity, and smart transitions, and Romero has become the anchor that holds it all together.

Moving on from United’s interest in Romero in 2024, the player has grown from strength to strength. Imagine him leaving Spurs and going there and not even being able to fulfil his potential because of the mess around him. Glad he stayed back, and even glad that he did not head to that circus called Old Trafford.
