Tottenham talent Lucas Bergvall opens up on his offensive role under new Thomas Frank this season
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall has clearly worked his way up to reach this level. He has been fantastic since joining the Lilywhites in the summer of 2024 from Swedish club IF Djurgardens.
The teenager enjoyed his breakout season at Spurs under Ange Postecoglou. He was among the key members in the club’s Europa League success, although the midfielder was unfortunate to miss out on playing in the final due to injury. Lucas Bergvall was handed a new contract in April as a reward for his consistent displays, and the 19-year-old has only gone from strength-to-strength under new boss Thomas Frank.
The Swedish international has already made 10 appearances across all competitions this season, proving that Thomas Frank trusts him to deliver on the pitch. He has grabbed each opportunity with both hands, cementing himself a key player for the north Londoners.

Lucas Bergvall opens up on his new role at Tottenham under Thomas Frank
Bergvall has headed to October’s international break after a strong start to the season with Tottenham. The Swede has started both Champions League outings against Villarreal and Bodo/Glimt, which is a telling evidence that Frank has not hesitated to hand him opportunities at the highest level.
Frank, though, sees the youngster differently to his predecessor Ange Postecoglou. That has seen the Dane use Bergvall in a more offensive role, which the 19-year-old has thrived in. He has chipped in with a goal and three assists, playing with a certain swagger, driving into spaces and linking play well in the final third.
Bergvall is happy with the new role at Spurs, whilst insisting he’d be ready to play anywhere if required.
“I’m comfortable with most of the roles in midfield. I’ve been playing more offensively lately and that’s where I feel best right now,” Bergvall said in an interview with Dagens Nyheter.
Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson was full of praise for Bergvall last week, calling him “amazing” and pointing out how rare it is for someone that young to make this kind of impact at a big Premier League club.
The midfielder was not involved in previous Sweden camps due to timings and fitness issues but has been named in the squad this time around. Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side will be facing Switzerland and Kosovo in the World Cup qualifiers on October 10 and 13, respectively. Tottenham fans will be excited to watch Bergvall in action for his national team later this week.

Bergvall has a bright future ahead
Bergvall’s maturity, leadership, calmness on the ball, decision making and spatial awareness simply belie his age. The Stockholm-born starlet is not just filling a spot in the XI actively influencing games, making key contributions both defensively and offensively. In the injury absences of star creative midfielders James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, the 19-year-old has given a different dimension to Spurs’ attack from the No.10 role.
Ex-Brentford boss Martin Allen has compared Bergvall with Arsenal star Declan Rice, claiming he will not sell the Swedish international for not less than £110m. Such recognition is well deserved and further shows that the sky is the limit for Bergvall if he continues to work harder, train properly and keep the appetite of improving every day.
Only 19, the future is already looking bright for the Tottenham man.
