The Tottenham Hotspur’s goalkeeping department has been a constant topic of debate in the fanbase in the last couple of years.

Spurs signed Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli in the summer of 2023, and he has not been entirely convincing. The 29-year-old spent several months on the sidelines last season following an ankle fracture, but when fit, he largely delivered mixed performances. Fortunately, he was at his sublime best in Tottenham’s Europa League final win over Manchester United in May in Bilbao.

Filling in the gloves of the experienced Hugo Lloris, who served the Lilywhites for almost 12 years, was never going to be an easy task and it has been proven. As such, Tottenham have been linked with a shock move for decorated Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The 33-year-old has been with Barcelona since 2014, an integral part of the Catalan club’s success for over a decade now. However, the German has seemingly lost his place in Hansi Flick’s starting XI to summer signing Joan Garcia, who has been assured that he would be a starter in La Liga and the Champions League this season.

Interestingly, Garcia is also currently injured and will be out for four to six weeks after undergoing minor knee surgery in the aftermath of last month’s victory at Real Oviedo. In the Spaniard’s absence, Wojciech Szczesny has been donning the gloves at Barcelona. Thus, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, when he returns from back injury in December, will only have to be content with minutes in the Copa del Rey.

Tottenham No.1 Guglielmo Vicario is on the radar of AC Milan

AC Milan monitoring Tottenham goalkeeper

As Tottenham are looking to sign Ter-Stegen, the future of current No.1 Guglielmo Vicario has been plunged into doubt. He could part ways with the Europa League winners should a new goalkeeper arrive in the New Year.

Now, according to a report from Italian outlet FootItalia, AC Milan are monitoring Vicario’s situation at White Hart Lane. They could consider a move for the Italian international next summer as a potential replacement for Mike Maignan.

Mike Maignan came close to joining Chelsea in the summer; however, the move fell through after AC Milan and the Pensioners failed to agree on a fee. The France international’s contract at San Siro is set to expire in June 2026, meaning he would be available to enter pre-contract negotiations with foreign clubs during the January window.

The report adds if Maignan does depart Milan at the end of the season, boss Max Allegri will be keen on bringing in a new goalkeeper with Serie A experience and Vicario could be a smart option.

Thomas Frank trusts Guglielmo Vicario as Tottenham No.1

Thomas Frank unlikely to sanction Vicario’s exit

Questions have been raised over Vicario’s performances since the start of 2024/25 season. talkSPORT pundit Darren Ambrose has urged Thomas Frank to drop the Italian from his starting XI as he feels the shot-stopper has been “found out” by teams.

The Italian came under scrutiny in Leeds’ equalising goal last weekend, when he parried a shot straight into the path of Noah Okafor for an easy tap in. He did redeem himself with a fantastic low save late in the second half, helping Spurs win the contest 2-1 at Elland Road.

Frank is unlikely to lose faith in his No.1 and look to offload him in 2026. The Dane has praised Vicario’s mentality and work ethic, and it did not come as a surprise when the shot-stopper was included in the five-man leadership group earlier this month. Keeping that in mind, we don’t feel the ex-Empoli man will be pushed out of White Hart Lane next year amid Milan interest.
