Tottenham Hotspur loanee Luka Vuskovic will be key in HSV Hamburger staying in the Bundesliga this season
Tottenham Hotspur youngster Luka Vuskovic secured a loan move to newly promoted Bundesliga side HSV Hamburger in August, and he has started settling into life in Germany with poise and confidence.
The teenager endured a rough start to life in the Bundesliga, with his debut for HSV Hamburger coming against Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich. HSV Hamburger were torn to shreds by Bayern Munich, who won the contest 5-0, and the Tottenham loanee got an early taste of how unforgiving life in a top league can be.
Since his forgetful debut, Luka Vuskovic has recovered very well and delivered some strong displays in a Hamburg shirt. He has been a pillar at the back, completing 90 minutes in each of the last four games. The Croatian international has been a part of the Hamburg backline that kept successive clean sheets against Union Berlin and Mainz.

Vuskovic has been showing his potential in the Bundesliga, with German media nicknaming him ‘Air Vuskovic’ for his dominant ability in the air. That blip against Bayern Munich did not dent the 18-year-old’s self-belief and bounced back with towering displays in recent Bundesliga fixtures. In recognition to his displays, the central defender has been named Bundesliga Rookie of the Month.
The upturn in form has seen Hamburg climb up to ninth in the Bundesliga table, and Vuskovic deserves huge plaudits for his contributions in both defence and attack. Off the pitch, the Spurs loanee has contributed massively too, with reputed journalist Alasdair Gold revealing that the Croat has helped Hamburg sell 1000 shirts with his name on the back thus far.
“Apparently, Hamburg have sold a thousand shirts with his name on the back. And he is expected to be a real key figure for Hamburg this summer this season in trying to keep them up,” Alasdair Gold said on his YouTube channel.
Vuskovic will be key for Hamburg to stay in the German top-flight
Indeed, Vuskovic is going to be a huge player in helping Hamburg achieve their first and foremost priority of retaining Bundesliga status. He has become a regular starter in Merlin Polzin’s backline, adding much-needed strength, physicality and energy. The defender has quickly become a fan favourite at Volksparkstadion, thanks to his fearless style of play and leadership skills that belie his age.
The Spurs talent’s impact off the pitch also cannot be discounted. Hamburg have benefited from Vuskovic’s presence in their roster, with 1000 shirts being sold only adding massively to their revenue. He has become a marketable brand now, and while the German club would love to continue milking profits off the pitch, their focus has to be treating Vuskovic with care on the pitch and supporting him in his development.
While Tottenham do have a recall option in the towering Croat’s loan, they must not disrupt his progress under Merlin Polzin and allow him to complete his loan in northern Germany.
