Tottenham Hotspur need to be proactive in the upcoming January transfer window
Tottenham have enjoyed a fantastic start to the new season under Thomas Frank, going unbeaten in their last seven matches across all competitions. The Lilywhites have shown tremendous fight, hunger, and resilience – qualities that have quickly won over the fans who initially questioned the club’s decision to appoint the Danish tactician. With Spurs aiming to compete on all four fronts, Frank has done more than enough to justify the faith placed in him.
However, managing a club of Spurs’ stature comes with its own challenges. And Frank has already had to make some major squad decisions early in his tenure. One of the biggest has been identifying a reliable replacement for Heung-Min Son on the left-flank – a void that has proven difficult to fill so far this season.

The Danish tactician has experimented with multiple options in an effort to solve the issue. Brennan Johnson was the first to be deployed on the left, allowing Mohammed Kudus to occupy his preferred position on the right. The manager then turned to Xavi Simons, though the Dutchman struggled to make an impact when played out of position. That decision did not sit well with the fans as well. More recently, Wilson Odobert has been given the opportunity to operate from the left as Frank continues to seek a consistent solution.
Tottenham still looking to fill the void on the left-wing
While Tottenham’s strong results have helped paper over the cracks, it is evident that the Lilywhites lack an explosive, natural left-winger capable of changing a game in an instant. Several players have been tried and tested in that role without lasting success. And it is a concern that could see Spurs dip into the transfer market in January for a genuine wide threat.
John Wenham has now urged the current crop of attackers at N17 to step up and take their chances of making that left-wing spot their own. Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said,
“It’s got to be consistent performances. There’s a real opportunity to have someone, and if someone doesn’t take that chance, I would suggest there’s every opportunity Tottenham will upgrade the position, if not in January, certainly in the summer.”
The Lilywhite Rose owner added,
“But they’ve got a whole season to audition for the role. Someone has got to realise that Son’s left and there’s a great opportunity to establish yourself as a first-team player at Tottenham on the left wing.”
John Wenham believes that is none of the current attackers can make the position their own, Tottenham will be forced to bring in a new left-winger in the upcoming transfer window. He also challenged the existing players to step up and fill the void left by Son, turning the vacancy into an opportunity for personal growth and long-term inclusion in the starting eleven.
As of now, Brennan Johnson has made the most prominent impact from the left-flank under Thomas Frank. The Welshman has managed to score three goals whilst playing in that role, making him a strong candidate to be deployed there until the club finds a permanent solution. With the recent cash injection from the Lewis family, it is important for the Lilywhites to bring in a new winger if Spurs want to build on last season’s Europa League success.
