Tottenham boss Thomas Frank is eyeing attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window
Tottenham Hotspur spent much of the summer transfer window pursuing a new attacking midfielder. They were left short of creativity in the middle of the park after James Maddison ruptured his ACL during a pre-season friendly against Newcastle United at the start of August.
The Lilywhites suffered several setbacks in their hunt for attacking reinforcements. Despite agreeing personal terms with the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze, they could not get their deals over the line. Gibbs-White stayed put at Nottingham Forest and signed a new contract, while Arsenal tempted Eze away from Crystal Palace.
Ultimately, Tottenham managed to bring in Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig on a long-term deal in the final week of the summer transfer window. The Europa League winners also bolstered their striker department with the deadline day acquisition of Randal Kolo Muani on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain. Yet, Thomas Frank was seemingly not satisfied with Tottenham’s summer business and still feels his squad can be strengthened in key areas.
Thomas Frank wants to bring in attacking reinforcements in January
Tottenham recently received a £100m injection of fresh capital from majority owners ENIC, and the money is set to go towards strengthening the squad for the present and the future. £100m might not seem like a hell lot of money in the grand scheme of things when it comes to the game, but it can certainly help Thomas Frank address at least a couple of key areas in his squad during the winter transfer window.
According to a report from Football Insider, the Tottenham boss is keen to improve the attacking areas of the pitch in Maddison’s injury absence, along with signing a central midfielder.
Maddison’s long-term unavailability, coupled with Dejan Kulusevski’s injury absence until at least December, has blunted the north Londoners’ attack this season. As Xavi Simons continues to adapt to the pace and physicality of the Premier League, Mohammed Kudus has had to shoulder the bulk of the team’s creativity.
Given the team’s lack of an out-and-out No.10, we can envisage Frank to push the Tottenham board to bring in such a profile to N17. Also, there are left-wing issues that needs resolving, with Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo emerging as a top target ahead of the winter window. Bayern Munich star Harry Kane has been linked with a sensational return to Spurs, but any move happening in January is highly unlikely.
Can Spurs go all out on Semenyo?
Semenyo has been breathing fire since the start of the 2025/26 season. He has already bagged six goals and three assists in seven Premier League games for Bournemouth, emerging as one of the surprise names in the race for the Golden Boot. The Ghanaian international is proving himself to be a very capable scorer and creator by cutting in onto his preferred right foot from the left flank.
Spurs are lacking such a physical, pacey and intimidating profile of a winger in their squad, with neither Wilson Odobert nor Brennan Johnson doing enough so far this season. Bournemouth want in the region of £70-80m for Semenyo, but he is certainly a player who could be worth splashing the cash on in the January transfer window.
With the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea also in the mix, the Lilywhites must not hesitate to break the bank for Semenyo in January itself and fortify their attacking department.
