Alasdair Gold feels Tottenham captain has ‘led by example’ this season under Thomas Frank

Date:

Cristian Romero has been one of the standout players for Tottenham Hotspur under Thomas Frank this season

Thomas Frank has enjoyed a strong start to life at Tottenham Hotspur and some of his players have performed extremely well.

Heading into the October international break, the Dane has got the Lilywhites sitting third in the Premier League table, through to the Carabao Cup fourth round and unbeaten in the Champions League so far. One of the players who has been a mainstay in Thomas Frank’s early tenure at White Hart Lane is Cristian Romero.

Appointed as the club’s new captain after the departure of Son Heung-min in August, Cristian Romero has led the team very well. The Argentinean’s partnership with Micky van de Ven in central defence has been a huge part behind Tottenham’s strong start to the season under Thomas Frank, with talkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara dubbing the duo the “best in the world”.

Alasdair Gold feels Cristian Romero has led Tottenham by an example

Romero, in particular, has been showing signs of getting back to his former self, after an injury-plagued 2024/25 campaign. He is making up for the lost time, and during his absence against Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League, Spurs were sixes and sevens defensively. This demonstrates how key the 2022 World Cup winner is to Frank’s side.

The 27-year-old, who captained Argentina to a friendly victory over Miami at the Hard Rock Stadium on Friday, is an underrated distributor of the ball and has also made attacking contributions. His visionary pinpoint long ball to Lucas Bergvall’s header in the 3-0 win over 10-man West Ham United last month demonstrated the central defender’s technical ability.

Alasdair Gold has been impressed with Romero’s contributions this season. The respected journalist gave him a 7.5 rating and feels the South American has led Tottenham by example under Frank. Writing in his column for Football London, Alasdair Gold said:

“The new Tottenham captain has led by example across the nine matches he’s played in and very little has got past him as he’s played his part in the clean sheets.

“Fresh from that new contract he also scored in the UEFA Super Cup and provided that perfect assist for Bergvall’s goal at West Ham. Spurs missed him when he didn’t play in Bodo and that says plenty.”

Romero must stay fit

Much of Tottenham’s problems last season was down to injuries, especially at the back. Romero, in isolation, spent months on the sidelined owing to a combination of toe, ankle and hamstring issues. When he returned, the defender was criticised often for his rashness and lapses in concentration as Spurs endured their worst-ever Premier League campaign.

The Argentinean international did deliver the goods when it most mattered, producing a Man of the Match display against Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao. At 27, he is in the peak of his powers and leading the team brilliantly. What Frank and the fans want now is to see Romero keep himself fit throughout the campaign.
