Tottenham are potentially seeking a new goalkeeper to replace Guglielmo Vicario in 2026
Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has had a mixed time in the Premier League since arriving from Empoli in the summer of 2023.
The Italian international enjoyed a decent debut season in north London, but was not entirely convincing. He became an easy target for the opposition from set-pieces, while his collection under pressure and distribution skills came under the scanner too.
Guglielmo Vicario attracted more criticism last season owing to his persistent mistakes. It was an injury-ravaged season for the Spurs glovesman, who spent several months on the sidelines following an ankle fracture. The 29-year-old’s performances this season have been heavily scrutinised in light of some of the soft goals he has conceded. In fact, talkSPORT pundit Darren Ambrose has called on Thomas Frank to drop Vicario from his starting XI.

Tottenham planning to sign a new goalkeeper in January
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Tottenham are planning to sign an upgrade on Vicario when the transfer window reopens in January. They are preparing to enter the transfer market for a new goalkeeper, someone who would be seen as a key part of the club’s long-term strategy.
Vicario may have pulled off some fine saves and improved over his command in the box, but it cannot be denied that he has cost Tottenham points this season. While some supporters want to see Antonin Kinsky given a chance to showcase what he can do, Frank seemingly wants an experienced option in goal.
The aforementioned report adds no specific names have been mentioned at this embryonic stage. It is believed that the north Londoners are looking for ‘new depth’ in the goalkeeping position, as Frank looks to continue rebuilding his squad.

Frank must stick with Vicario this season
While the eye-test may suggest Vicario has not been performing at his best, the mini-stats demonstrate a completely different picture altogether. As per DataMB, the Italian, when compared to other Premier League goalkeepers, ranks first in goals prevented, saves percentage, number of touches, short passes completed and total passes completed.
The stats clearly show that the Udine-born star, who is linked with AC Milan, has been silently performing well and busting the myth, as well as leading the team on the pitch. Thus, it is not surprising that Vicario has been included in the five-man leadership group last week, which illustrates why Frank and his coaching staff rate him so highly on and off the pitch.
Although the Lilywhites are potentially seeking a new No.1 in 2026, Frank should stick with Vicario and allow him to complete this season.
