Cristian Romero is hoping to lead from the front as Tottenham take on Aston Villa in the Premier League next
Tottenham are enjoying a brilliant start to the new campaign under Thomas Frank this season. The Lilywhites are flying high in the Premier League and see themselves sitting third on the league table, just two points behind league leaders Arsenal. They have just lost one out of their seven games in the competition, keeping three clean sheets along the way.
However, the ongoing international break may have arrived at the wrong time for the North London club. Spurs had just regained momentum after a run of draws, entering the October break on a high following a crucial 2-1 win against Leeds United. Goals from Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus sealed the victory at Elland Road, extending the club’s unbeaten streak to seven matches in all competitions.

Now, Thomas Frank will be hoping that his players return from international duty fit and ready ahead of a demanding set of fixtures. With Spurs aiming to compete on all four fronts this season, the Danish tactician can ill afford any injuries to key players as the schedule intensifies over the coming weeks.
Tottenham want Cristian Romero to be available for PL clash next weekend
Tottenham are preparing to host Aston Villa at home next weekend, a match that could prove pivotal in maintaining their place inside the top-four. Unai Emery’s side are also in fine form, having won four consecutive matches in all competitions, making the upcoming clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium anything but straightforward.
Keeping that in mind, Spurs have decided to pull out all stops to get their key players available in time for the heavyweight clash. As per Matt Law (via The Telegraph), the Lilywhite have avoided a club-vs-country backlash over Cristian Romero after paying for him to return from international duty on a private charter. In doing so, the North London club is ensuring that the 28-year-old is ready in time to play against Aston Villa next Sunday (October 19th).
Romero is playing for Argentina against Puerto Rico in Miami on Wednesday. This means that the scheduled national team flight to England would force him to miss the Premier League clash on Sunday. That is exactly why Joe Lewis has decided to pitch in and book a private charter for the defender as soon as the game against Puerto Rico finishes.
Having the 28-year-old available for the clash against Aston Villa will significantly bolster Tottenham’s chances of getting a positive result. The Lilywhites were stuck in the same situation last season during the September international break. They refused to pay for Romero’s flight back, forcing him to miss out on the North London derby the following weekend.
So, by the looks of it, Spurs have learnt their lesson and have avoided any conflict or controversy this time around. As far as Romero is concerned, the prolific centre-back will look to make the most of this and give his all for the club in the upcoming game next weekend. Being the club captain, the 28-year-old will have added responsibilities to lead from the front and help the Lilywhites get over the line against Aston Villa.
