Tottenham must fork out at least €45m to land Lazio star

Date:

Lazio value their star defender Mario Gila at €45-50 million amid Tottenham Hotspur interest

Tottenham Hotspur have already taken major strides under Thomas Frank, showing their competitiveness, resilience and tactical flexibility. The defensive solidity has been one of their many positives in the campaign thus far.

The Lilywhites have kept five clean sheets across all competitions, a proof to how well-drilled and disciplined they have become under Thomas Frank’s tutelage. It is a complete contrast to what they were in Ange Postecoglou’s two-year reign, with Frank’s pragmatic approach and tactical flexibility bringing positive results.

Spurs were badly exposed defensively last season when the centre-back pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven spent several months on the sidelines due to injury problems. The duo, dubbed the best in the world by talkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara, returning to peak fitness levels and form this term have made a massive difference. With Romero and Van de Ven marshalling the backline, Tottenham have been a tough nut to crack.

However, given Romero and Van de Ven have patchy injury records and remain aggressive, front-footed defenders, having quality cover for them is an absolute must. Kevin Danso is a decent defender but not elite, while Ben Davies can cover for their absence for a few games at the most. Young Archie Gray got a taste of playing in central defence last term due to an injury crisis but his future lies in midfield.

As per reliable BBC journalist Sami Mokbel, Tottenham are looking for a player who’d constantly push and probe Romero and Van de Ven. And it looks like Frank has set his sights on a defender from Serie A.

Recent reports suggest Tottenham are interested in signing Lazio centre-back Mario Gila. The Spaniard’s stock has risen in Serie A in the last couple of seasons thanks to his composed yet aggressive style of defending. His technical quality on the ball, combined with his strength and aerial prowess, have made him a coveted commodity. The likes of Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Brighton and Everton have all been tracking the 25-year-old’s situation at Lazio.

Now, according to an exclusive report from CaughtOffside, Tottenham are planning a January swoop for Mario Gila. He has emerged as a serious candidate to bolster the north London outfit’s defensive unit. Contracted until 2027, Lazio would be open to offers for their star defender at €45-50 million- a price that won’t scare Spurs.

Mario Gila would be a terrific buy for Tottenham

Gila has proven himself in Serie A and could be open to a new challenge, perhaps in the Premier League. Bringing the Lazio star to N17 would instantly elevate the quality of the Tottenham backline. The former Spanish youth international’s leadership at the back, along with his reading of the game and massive ceiling, is a recipe for success.

The Barcelona-born talent would thrive under Frank, offering the depth and stability needed to ensure Spurs do not suffer if injuries strike again. For around €45-50 million, the Lilywhites could land a centre-back who is entering the peak of his powers and push both Romero and Van de Ven to their limits.

All in all, Frank must push the club to test Lazio’s resolve with an attractive bid in January. If the Dane wants to enjoy a successful debut season in north London, improving the squad with the capture of Gila is essential.
