Rangers star on Tottenham Hotspur radar; competition heavy amidst potential January exit

Tottenham Hotspur weighing up a move for Rangers midfielder Nico Raskin

Tottenham Hotspur will need to strengthen their squad in the upcoming January transfer window if they hope to build on last season’s Europa League success.

The north London club have made a flying start under Thomas Frank this season and currently sit just two points behind league leaders and arch-rivals, Arsenal. However, to take that next step and mount a serious top-four challenge as well as win a cup competition, reinforcements are crucial.

One of the most pressing issues Frank must address in January is the lack of depth in the midfield. Yves Bissouma’s career at Spurs is as much as done, having entered the final 10 months of his contract. The Mali international, who suffered a serious-looking ankle injury on international duty, is not in Thomas Frank’s plans and will be offloaded in 2026.

Pape Matar Sarr, in contrast, has been a key player for the Lilywhites, flourishing in an advanced role this season. However, he will leave for the AFCON in mid-December, potentially leaving the Spurs boss with Lucas Bergvall, Joao Palhinha, Rodrigo Bentancur and Archie Gray as options in the middle of the park. For the north Londoners to seriously push for a top-four finish, strengthening the midfield is an absolute must in January.

Rangers talent emerges as a target for Tottenham

Tottenham recently announced that majority shareholder, the Lewis family trust, has pumped £100m of new capital into the club. The north Londoners have been targeting young, hungry and dynamic talents with high potential in recent years, and it looks they are set to stick to that strategy.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Rangers midfielder Nico Raskin has been added to Tottenham’s midfield shortlist. There has been interest in the player from clubs in Italy, Germany and Spain, as the Belgian continues to attract attention amid his desire for a new challenge away from Rangers.

Nico Raskin has been a fantastic performer for Rangers since joining in a £2million deal from Standard Liege in January 2023, mixing technical ability, energy, tenacity and versatility. However, the 24-year-old’s wish to leave Rangers during the summer transfer window led to tensions, with former boss Russell Martin freezing him from the squad. While Russell Martin was sacked earlier this month for overseeing a disastrous start to the new season, it has not helped extinguish speculation surrounding the midfielder’s future.

The report adds the Gers have a big possibility of losing their star midfielder in the winter window. They could demand £20-25m for Raskin, whose contract runs until 2027, factoring in a sell-on clause allocated to Standard Liege. Crystal Palace and Wolves, as well as top clubs from Serie A and Bundesliga are monitoring the Belgium international.

Raskin would be a quality acquisition for Spurs

Tottenham have been monitoring Raskin’s performances at Rangers and sees him as a future profile to bolster their midfield. The diminutive midfielder’s display for Belgium in the 4-2 away over Wales in a World Cup qualifier on Monday night further enhanced his stock. At 24, his maturity, vision, versatility and tenacity align perfectly with Spurs’ recruitment strategy focusing on players who have the potential to improve.

A potential move to White Hart Lane would present new challenges and give Raskin a great platform to further his career. He’d have to compete with experienced midfielders but the perks of playing at a top level cannot be discounted. The Belgian would benefit from regular playing time under Frank and could establish himself as a mainstay in Spurs’ evolving project.

Valued in the region of £20-25m, Tottenham signing Raskin from Rangers ahead of other interested clubs would represent a major coup of sorts.
