“Apply genuine pressure”- Tottenham backed to add depth in one key position in the January transfer window

Date:

Tottenham Hotspur are aiming to back Thomas Frank by bringing in new players in the upcoming January transfer window

All things considered, Tottenham fans have plenty to be pleased about with the way their club has started the new season under Thomas Frank. The Lilywhites are unbeaten in their last seven matches across all competitions and currently sit third in the Premier League table. Perhaps most encouragingly, the North London side have managed to avoid the defensive injury crisis that plagued them around this time last season.

At the heart of Tottenham’s strong start lies the ever-improving partnership between Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. The duo has become the backbone of everything positive happening at N17 this campaign. Week after week, they have produced commanding performances, providing the stability that Thomas Frank’s side thrives on. It would not be an exaggeration to say that they form one of the best centre-back pairings in the Premier League this season.

Thomas Frank’s men have already registered five clean sheets in their opening ten matches this season. This shows that the Danish tactician has addressed the issues at the back and made the Lilywhites more compact and harder to beat. But there is a growing concern among supporters that a lack of quality depth behind the first-choice centre-backs could become a problem later in the season.

Tottenham must look to bring in new defender in January

Last season’s injury crisis exposed just how fragile Spurs could become when key defenders were sidelined, and the same risk lingers now. As things stand, Tottenham are just one Romero or Van de Ven injury away from potentially derailing their progress under Frank.

With that in mind, reliable journalist Sami Mokbel has urged the club to prioritise signing a new central defender in the January transfer window. Writing for the BBC, Mokbel said,

“You’d imagine a new centre-back to apply genuine pressure on to Cristian Romero and Mickey van de Ven will be among Frank’s priorities. Romero and Van de Ven are up there with the best partnerships in the division, but strength in depth at centre-back is an area that needs work.”

Mokbel’s assessment is spot on. Tottenham must do everything possible to bring in a quality defender in the coming months. Additional depth at the back would not only protect the squad from potential injuries, but also push Romero and Van de Ven to maintain their high performances levels. Mokbel believes that Frank will need defensive reinforcements if he hopes to keep the Lilywhites competitive on all four fronts this season.

For now, Kevin Danso, Radu Drăgușin, and Ben Davies provide cover for the first-choice pairing, but none of them possess the same calibre or consistency required to elevate Tottenham to the next level. To truly compete with England’s elite, the Lilywhites will need a world-class centre-back capable of making an instant impact. Strengthening this area could be the key to helping Thomas Frank’s Tottenham take that final step toward becoming genuine contenders.
