Richarlison exit looms large as Tottenham Hotspur consider replacements
Tottenham Hotspur see themselves in a very eerie situation. The need to upgrade on the frontline options is as real as Arsenal’s European trophy drought. However, with the lack of fit options at the minute, the club has some working around to do, especially with the situation of 28-year-old Richarlison.
The Brazilian international, who moved to Hotspur Lane from Goodison Park back in 2022 has been a not-so-successful transfer for the Lilywhites. During his time with Everton, Richarlison was scoring very important goals for the club, and in important matches too which obviously contributed to him moving to Tottenham. In 152 appearances for Everton, he secured a total of 68 G/A, which works out to be o.4 goal contributions a game in a defend-first setup.
Tottenham, being one of the better sides of the league in terms of possession and attacking style of play, could have helped him elevate his game, and make him a top-class player. However, he has only got 34 G/A in 101 Tottenham games, taking his tally to 0.3 goal contributions a game which is very very grim, considering the £60m incl. add-ons fee that the club spent on him. The club has now firmly decided to move on from the player and it is just a matter of which window.
What next for Richarlison?
His current deal with the club ends in 2027 (Transfermarkt), so there’s until the coming summer Spurs can look for a suitable finder for him. However, former Tottenham scout Dan Brown, in an exclusive with Football Insider talked about how the club cannot let him go in January due to the lack of a proper replacement.
“Richarlison could be tempted to leave Tottenham,”
“But that would force them to go out and sign a new striker, because they don’t have the depth in that position to be letting people go without replacing them.
“Given the way the market it at the moment, there aren’t too many strikers out there. Whoever they go for, especially mid-way through the season, is not going to be cheap.
“It will depend on how much money they get from Richarlison, because that might make a difference.”
The market remains a tough nut to crack. Strikers are going at very very inflated rates, and without at least, agreeing to a deal in principle with a player, Spurs might find it tough to let go of Richarlison, who is still good enough to put in a shift or two.
Things will also depend on the amount of money Spurs can confidently quote and land in exchange for Richarlison, as there would not be too many takers. Despite interest from Saudi and the MLS, negotiations seem to have headed nowhere, and a deal for January seems really tough, unless someone snaps his ankle in either the Pro League, or somewhere in the Americas.
“Otherwise I think it will be difficult for them to let him go, because they can’t do without him.
“Solanke’s injury issues mean they need somebody who can fill in while he’s out, they’re not going to put themselves in a position where they’re caught short.”
All in all, while proceeds from any sale would influence feasibility, yet Dominic Solanke’s ongoing issues preclude any risk of being under-resourced. Let’s see how things go until the January window opens up. COYS.
