Serie A giants to challenge Tottenham for PL proven defensive lynchpin

Inter Milan to square off against Tottenham Hotspur for Marc Guehi

Tottenham endured a forgettable domestic campaign last season, narrowly avoiding relegation after finishing just one place above the drop zone. The Lilywhites suffered a club-record 22 league defeats and managed only five clean sheets throughout the Premier League season. Their defensive disarray and lack of structure ultimately cost Ange Postecoglou his job at N17 once the campaign came to an end.

This season, however, things look vastly different under Thomas Frank. The Danish tactician has quickly implemented a clear game plan and tactical discipline that has transformed Tottenham into one of the more resilient sides in the league. The chaos that often defined Spurs’ play last season has disappeared, replaced by an organized and compact system that makes them hard to break down.

A key highlight of this transformation has been the formidable partnership between Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero at the heart of defence. The duo have been near-flawless across the opening ten matches, providing both stability and leadership from the back. However, the drop in defensive quality becomes evident whenever one of them is rested, exposing the lack of depth in that area.

Tottenham need to fend off competition to land Marc Guehi

With that in mind, Tottenham are expected to prioritize strengthening their backline in the upcoming January transfer window. The North London club are actively looking for a new centre-back who can provide genuine competition for Van de Ven and Romero. Bringing in another top-quality defender would not only keep the existing pair on their toes but also give Frank greater tactical flexibility without sacrificing quality.

Recent reports suggest Spurs have identified Marc Guehi as the ideal player to bolster the backline under Thomas Frank. The England international’s move to Liverpool fell through at the eleventh-hour in the summer, and that has given some renewed hope to the Lilywhites for potentially luring him to N17. The North London club view Guehi as a low-risk, high-impact signing as his contract expires next summer.

However, there has been a new twist in the race for Guehi’s signature. According to Tuttosport, Inter Milan have now entered the fray, identifying the 25-year-old as a potential replacement for Stefan de Vrij and Matteo Darmian, both of whom are nearing the end of their contracts. The Serie A giants reportedly see Guehi as a perfect long-term partner for Alessandro Bastoni and Manuel Akanji in their backline.

It remains to be seen where Guehi’s future lies, but as it stands, Spurs appear to be trailing in the race for his signature. Still, the upcoming transfer window could present an opportunity for Tottenham to turn the tide, especially if they can convince the defender to become a central figure in Thomas Frank’s ongoing project at N17.
