Tottenham star yet to convince after slow start to life at N17; still ‘lot to prove’

Date:

Xavi Simons still has time on his side as he looks to prove his critics wrong at Tottenham Hotspur

While Joao Palhinha and Mohammed Kudus have seamlessly adapted to life at Tottenham, one player is still struggling to find his rhythm at N17. Xavi Simons is yet to make a significant impact under Thomas Frank after joining the club on a long-term deal from RB Leipzig in the summer. There is no questioning the Dutchman’s immense talent and potential, but he has not yet managed to showcase that consistently in the Premier League.

The 22-year-old’s slow start has not been helped by Frank’s early decision to deploy him on the flanks during the opening games of the season. Simons often looked uncomfortable playing out wide, particularly on the left, where he found it difficult to adapt to the physical demands and tempo of English football. He struggled to beat defenders one-on-one and had limited influence in the final third.

However, it’s fair to say that Simons looks far more at home when operating as a No.10. He thrives when positioned closer to the opposition’s goal, linking up fluidly with the striker and dictating play through the middle. His impressive performances against Leeds United and Brighton offered a glimpse of what he can bring to the team when played in his preferred role.

Xavi Simons needs to quickly show his worth at Tottenham

Despite these encouraging signs, Simons has yet to fully convince the Tottenham faithful that he is the right long-term successor to James Maddison in the attacking midfield role. The numbers suggest that he is still struggling to make a decisive impact in front of goal — something that must change soon if he hopes to retain his place in Thomas Frank’s starting XI.

Gabby Agbonlahor has not doubled down on his stance about Simons’ performances for Tottenham this season. Speaking on talkSPORT (Via X), he said,

“What has he done? Simons has done nothing this season, mate. He’s got a lot to prove.”

Agbonlahor’s comments reflect the growing sentiment that Simons still has work to do to justify the hype surrounding his arrival at N17. And while some may agree with the former Aston Villa striker, it is also important to remember that the youngster is still adapting to the relentless pace and intensity of the Premier League.

Tottenham’s congested fixture schedule could, in fact, work in his favour. With the Lilywhites set to play seven matches in the next 22 days, Simons will have ample opportunities to build rhythm and confidence. There is no better time for him to open his account for the club and establish himself as a key figure in Tottenham’s attack as they push to compete on all fronts this season.

Will the Dutchman find his feet at N17 in the coming days? Or is it right to claim that he has not got what it takes to play for Spurs? Let us know in the comments below.
