Tottenham Hotrspur are keen to bring in a new defender next summer and Marc Guehi will be on the move
Tottenham’s defensive stats strongly indicate that the Lilywhites have taken major strides under Thomas Frank this season. Frank’s men look compact and resolute at the back, rarely conceding clear-cut chances even against tricky opponents. The low-block approach implemented by the Danish tactician has helped the team maintain a disciplined structure, allowing little space for opposition attackers to exploit.
Spurs have already managed to register five clean sheets in all competitions under Frank this season — a clear sign of how far they have come in such a short period. Most of the credit for this achievement should go to Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, who have formed one of the strongest centre-back pairings in the Premier League. Their understanding, aggression, and balance have been key to Tottenham’s defensive improvement.

However, the sudden drop-off in quality when either of them is unavailable remains evident. At present, Frank has Radu Drăgușin, Ben Davies, and Kevin Danso waiting in the wings to step in for Romero or Van de Ven, but it’s clear that these players cannot be relied upon if Spurs are serious about bridging the gap with their top-flight rivals.
Tottenham receive further boost in their approach for Marc Guehi
Recent reports suggest Tottenham have identified Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi as the ideal player to strengthen their backline for next season. The England international has quickly become one of the Premier League’s standout defenders, and Spurs have taken notice. The report also adds that the 25-year-old is keeping his options open after his proposed move to Liverpool collapsed at the eleventh hour during the summer window.
Now, Palace manager Oliver Glasner has dropped a bombshell regarding Guehi’s future at Selhurst Park. Speaking in his pre-match presser (via talkSPORT), Glasner said,
“I think Marc has already told us that he doesn’t [want to] sign a new contract, so he will leave next year. The club wanted [him to stay]. They offered Marc a new contract. But he said, ‘no, I want to make something different’. And that’s normal.”
Glasner’s comments confirm that Marc Guehi has no intention of extending his contract with Crystal Palace in the coming months. This effectively means the England international could be available on a free transfer once the current season ends. It wouldn’t be a surprise if several top European clubs line up for his signature now that he’s set to become available in the market.
That said, signing Guehi will not be as straightforward as it sounds for Spurs. Reports indicate that Inter Milan, PSG, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Real Madrid are all interested in the defender as they look to bolster their backlines ahead of next season. Tottenham will have to find a way to convince him to join the project at N17 and become a vital part of a team determined to build on last season’s Europa League success.
