Tottenham head of scouting Rob Mackenzie opens up on beating Barcelona to Lucas Bergvall
Tottenham Hotspur have signed some of the best young talent in the world in recent years. The standout name is Lucas Bergvall.
In February 2024, Spurs signed Lucas Bergvall from Swedish side Djurgarden for £8.5million on a five-year contract. Rob Mackenzie, Head of Scouting at Tottenham, played a crucial role in the youngster’s signing. Brought to the club by Johan Lange from Aston Villa, Rob Mackenzie made an immediate impact with his expertise and lured the Swedish talent to north London.
Lucas Bergvall turned down an offer from Barcelona in favour of Tottenham’s project which was then spearheaded by Ange Postecoglou. Now, Thomas Frank has replaced Postecoglou at the helm, and the central midfielder has been going from strength to strength this season.

Tottenham head of scouting claims Bergvall is a generational talent
Rob Mackenzie has now opened up on how Spurs signed Bergvall from Djurgarden. The Tottenham official also explains how he feels about the midfielder after managing to sign him ahead of Barcelona.
“We were able to convince him to join us ahead of Barcelona, which was a fantastic coup for the club. I think maybe the opportunities to sign these guys in the windows is getting smaller and smaller, and you have to be able to react (with) less information faster,” Mackenzie said on Training Ground Guru Podcast.
“I think in the case of Lucas Bergvall, he is a genuine generational talent and a fantastic human being. You realise that as soon as you meet him that this is different. Here is a kid who has the humility of a 19-year-old at the time, but who looks you in the eyes and gives you the impression that this guy can hold his own.”
Bergvall getting better under Thomas Frank
Identifying Bergvall’s talent via scouts and then acting at the right time was extremely crucial for Tottenham. What makes his signing even more impressive is the fact that the Hotspur Way chiefs managed to sell our club’s project well and get him under the noses of Barcelona. It was definitely a big coup.
The Swede is going from strength to strength under Thomas Frank, contributing offensively more this season. He has been used in an advanced midfield role by Frank to compensate for James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski’s injury absences, and the teenager- to majority’s surprise- has thrived. He has already bagged a goal and an assist in six Premier League games.
All eyes will now be on Frank and how he develops the prodigious Bergvall this season and beyond.
