“Lead by example”- Cristian Romero shares insight on his leadership style at Tottenham

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero wants to create his own legacy at N17 before calling it quits at the club

At one point during the summer transfer window, it seemed almost certain that Cristian Romero’s time at Tottenham was coming to an end. The Argentina international was heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, with reports claiming that Diego Simeone personally contacted the defender on a daily basis in an attempt to convince him to move to Spain.

However, the transfer never materialised. In a surprising turn of events, Romero instead committed his future to the North London club by signing a new contract extension, defying all expectations. To make the moment even sweeter for Spurs fans, the 28-year-old was also appointed club captain following Heung-Min Son’s departure from N17.

Since then, Romero has led from the front in every sense. The Argentine has played a key role in helping Thomas Frank enjoy an excellent start to life at Tottenham. Under his captaincy, Spurs are unbeaten in their last seven games across all competitions and currently sit third in the Premier League table. They have also made a strong start in the Champions League, collecting four points from their opening two matches.

Romero has already etched his name into Tottenham folklore after playing a starring role in last season’s Europa League triumph. The Argentine was immense in the final against Manchester United, earning the Man of the Match award for a commanding performance that helped end the club’s 17-year wait for silverware. His contribution to that success will be remembered fondly by Spurs supporters for years to come.

Now wearing the armband, Romero recently offered an insight into his leadership style during the club’s Fan Forum. He explained,

“Alluded to the fact that I’m not a big talker around the place and certainly on the field, I tend to try and lead by example. I think I try and guide the rest of the lads with my style of play and the action that I’m involved in on the field. I try and show by my style of play. I wear my heart on my sleeve and I very much want to win.”

True to his words, Romero has been leading by example this season. Known for his passion and aggression, he has added maturity to his game by channelling his intensity in a more focused and controlled manner. The 28-year-old’s leadership has helped bring stability and composure to Tottenham’s defence while setting the tone for the rest of the team.

As captain, Romero will now aim to build on last season’s Europa League success and help guide the Lilywhites to further glory under Thomas Frank. Winning another trophy with the club would undoubtedly cement his status as a bona fide Tottenham legend. For now, Spurs fans will simply hope their inspirational captain continues to perform at the highest level — leading by example, wearing his heart on his sleeve, and pushing the team to greater heights in what could be a defining season at N17.
