SPL giants keen to retain Tottenham target; January move to N17 proving difficult

Rangers are unwilling to sell Nico Raskin in the January transfer window amid Tottenham interest

Tottenham Hotspur need to address their midfield issues in the upcoming January transfer window if they are to challenge for the Champions League spots this season.

The 2-1 home defeat to Aston Villa exposed problems in Spurs’ midfield, especially in transitions. As good as the midfield pivot of Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur have been this season, the duo lack mobility to cover spaces. Pape Matar Sarr is full of energy and tenacity but his technical ability requires refining to become a regular starter for the Lilywhites.

One of Tottenham’s top priorities should be bringing in a new No.8. Thomas Frank needs a progressive ball-carrier who can operate alongside Palhinha in the middle of the park, someone capable of dictating the tempo of play, breaking defensive lines and keep possession in tight areas of the pitch.

Rangers plan to keep Nico Raskin in January amid Tottenham interest

Rangers midfielder Nico Raskin has emerged as a target for Tottenham. There has been interest from clubs in Italy, Germany and Spain, so Spurs face heavy competition to secure the player’s signature in 2026. The Belgian has been a star performer for Rangers since joining from Standard Liege in 2023, growing in stature with every passing season. However, this season has been different.

Nico Raskin has endured a slow start to the 2025/26 season, primarily due to him falling out with former Rangers boss Russell Martin. Danny Rohl has been appointed Russell Martin’s successor at Ibrox, which has led to a new development surrounding Raskin’s future.

According to Football Insider’s transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke, Rangers are set to keep hold of Raskin amid Tottenham interest. They have no plans to let the midfielder leave in January, given his importance to the team and their horrendous start to the campaign.

“There’s no surprise that he’s attracting interest. There was interest in the summer on him, but Rangers managed to keep hold of him,” Pete O’Rourke said on Inside Track podcast.

“I don’t imagine they’d be willing to sell in January, they’re planning to keep Raskin around and they’re going to need him if they are going to turn around their fortunes.

“I don’t expect there will be any move for him in the January window, he’s under contract until 2027.

“There is Premier League interest in him, there’s interest from other European leagues as well.

“I think there’ll be a big summer ahead for Rangers and if Raskin doesn’t see any improvement maybe with Rangers, then the player himself could be tempted by a move away.”

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank must sign a midfielder in January

Spurs must keep tracking Raskin’s situation

With new manager now in place, Raskin would want to impress him from the onset and become a regular member of the team once again. New boss Danny Rohl would also be keen to integrate the Belgium international in his squad knowing his quality on and off the ball. Rohl’s appointment is certain to have an impact on the 24-year-old’s future at the Ibrox, with the Glasgow giants now unlikely to listen to offers for him in January.

This would come as a setback for Tottenham in their pursuit of Raskin. Given the north Londoners want to reinforce their midfield unit, they could either aggressively push for his signature in January or move onto other targets. Either way, we must at least keep monitoring Raskin’s development and how he performs under the new manager at Rangers.
