Ivan Toney backed to thrive under Thomas Frank at Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham’s most recent Premier League defeat came at the hands of Aston Villa at home last weekend. The Lilywhites were far from their best, despite taking the lead inside the opening ten minutes through Rodrigo Bentancur. Although they created several good opportunities as the game went on, the absence of a clinical goal-scorer once again came back to haunt Thomas Frank’s side.
Mathys Tel and Randal Kolo Muani both had golden chances to turn the game around for the North London club, but neither managed to adjust their bodies well enough to guide the ball into the net from close range. This is precisely where Spurs missed having an experienced centre-forward — a natural No.9 who would have instinctively finished those chances.

Before the issue becomes a major concern for Thomas Frank, Tottenham must prioritise signing a new striker in the upcoming January transfer window. The Lilywhites cannot afford to rely solely on their current attacking options for the second half of the campaign. With Frank aiming to compete on all fronts this season, the need for a new No.9 has become increasingly urgent.
Tottenham eyeing a possible deal for Ivan Toney in January
Tottenham are reportedly targeting Al Ahli striker Ivan Toney in January as they look to strengthen their attacking depth. Adding fuel to the speculation, Thomas Frank has not ruled out the possibility of reuniting with the England international, admitting that Toney would be an excellent addition due to his proven goal-scoring ability.
Now, Byran King has also weighed in on the matter and urged Toney to make the move to N17. Speaking to Tottenham News, King said,
“Without doubt (Toney would be interested in Spurs move). The one thing that he’s got to be guaranteed if he wants to challenge for an England place is a regular slot for the team that are going to take him. I couldn’t see that being a problem with Frank because he knows him and he knows what he’s capable of.”
The ex-scout added,
“I think the wide players and the midfielders that Tottenham have got would suit him. If there’s a possibility of getting him on loan, then Tottenham should seriously look at that.”
King believes Toney would be keen on a move to Tottenham as he eyes a place in England’s World Cup squad next summer. The 29-year-old would be a smart signing for the Lilywhites, especially given Frank’s familiarity with him from their time together at Brentford. Moreover, Tottenham’s attacking style and creative setup would complement Toney’s strengths far better than they do Richarlison’s. King insists that if a loan deal becomes possible, Spurs should act swiftly to secure his signature.
There’s little doubt that Toney would represent an upgrade on Richarlison if he were to join the Lilywhites. The England international has consistently proven himself at the top level, and a move to Tottenham could provide the perfect platform to keep his World Cup hopes alive. However, such a move would likely require the 29-year-old to take a significant wage cut in the coming months.
So, will Spurs end up signing the prolific striker? Or is he better off in Saudi for the second half of the campaign? Let us know in the comments below.
