Spanish ‘absolute goalscorer’ on Tottenham Hotspur radar; January addition could alter fortunes

Tottenham Hotspur are considering a move for Porto striker Samu Aghehowa

Despite a positive start to the new campaign, Tottenham remain a work in progress under Thomas Frank this season. The recent results against Aston Villa and AS Monaco are enough proof that the Lilywhites need to rectify a lot of issues if they are to close the gap on their rivals anytime soon. They still have a long way to go before they can compete with the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal.

Tottenham will need to strengthen in the upcoming winter transfer window if Frank hopes to challenge on all fronts this season. His first priority should be to resolve the team’s attacking problems, which have become increasingly apparent in recent weeks. A lack of consistent threat in the final third of the pitch has frustrated fans, many of whom are growing impatient with the club’s current centre-forward options.

Tottenham are interested in landing Porto striker Samu Aghehowa in the coming months.

Richarlison, despite a bright start to the season, has struggled to maintain consistency and now appears to be losing his grip on the starting striker role. Meanwhile, Dominic Solanke has endured fitness problems and is still recovering from the ankle injury he picked up during the summer.

Tottenham keeping tabs on Porto striker Samu Aghehowa

Recent reports suggest Tottenham have identified Porto striker Samu Aghehowa as the solution to their attacking problems. The Lilywhites are monitoring the Spaniard’s progress this season and are willing to make an offer for him in the coming months if he is available in the market for a reasonable price. Thomas Frank is eager to strengthen his attack and he would welcome the arrival of the talented striker in January.

Now, Dean Jones has provided us with some lates update on the transfer situation involving the 21-year-old and Spurs. Speaking to TEAMtalk, Jones said,

“Spurs have had a look at his situation, as I have reported on here last month, but it’s difficult to gauge just how realistic it is that they make an offer. Tottenham are currently in the process of sorting out their targets and, up front, they are having to contemplate the fact they don’t have an absolute goalscorer to rely on.”

The journalist added,

“Ideally, it would be Solanke but he keeps getting setbacks. So it is one that is on the radar but, because I know they are also very much looking at signing another wide forward, I’m waiting to get an update on just how much they could put into a forward like Samu in January.”

As Jones points out, Spurs have been keeping tabs on Aghehowa, but it remains uncertain whether they will follow up their interest with a concrete bid. The club are already lining up potential targets for the winter window, especially given Solanke’s ongoing fitness concerns. However, as Jones notes, it’s unclear how much Tottenham are willing to spend on a striker of Aghehowa’s profile midway through the season.

Well, it goes without saying that Spurs need to bring in attacking reinforcements in the winter. But Frank and the recruitment team must be cautious not to overspend on a single player who may struggle to adapt to life at N17. What Spurs truly need is a forward who can make an immediate impact during the second half of the campaign. A short-term addition might prove to be the smarter move as they look to sustain their push across all competitions.
