Luka Vuskovic reveals why he opted to join Tottenham Hotspur over Manchester City
We know how Tottenham Hotspur wanted to bring in a plethora of high-potential young players at Hotspur Way in line with the recently adopted transfer policy of signing starlets and developing them into their potential within the corridors of N17. But still, when the Lilywhites signed Luka Vuskovic, it felt like a statement.
The Croatian teenager was aggressively linked with a move to Manchester City. But he ended up making a move to join Spurs over Pep Guardiola’s side. And now the North Londoner loanee has opened up on exactly why he chose to don that Lilywhites badge instead of a Citizens one.
Vuskovic speaks on choosing Tottenham
While speaking in a candid chat with Sport Klub, he said it came down to one thing: that he did not want to only be a number. Moreover, he went on to point out the excitement around the project at Tottenham Hotspur stadium, along with the way that the North Londoners presented him as more than just another young face among the roster. He said (via. Sport Klub):
“The feeling (of signing for Spurs) was really great, I was overjoyed. My father called me, said that they were just waiting for my signature, that they really wanted me.
“They showed me the project. And I really liked it. I didn’t think much about it.”
“I think Tottenham was a perfect fit because they presented a great project. Manchester City has many, many, many young players. I didn’t want to be just a number.
“At Tottenham, they presented me as one of the top projects. And that really meant a lot to me at that moment. That was the deciding factor, let’s say.”
Given how Tottenham outlined a proper role that he would be playing and the hows behind making him come into his potential, it shows the depth of understanding that the club are having behind signings. It also shows how the decision-makers at Hotspur Way are prioritising long-term plans over just signing players for the sake of it. And the fact that Tottenham can go into meetings and better Man City with their explanation and planning shows that the club is already operating at a higher dimension than many supporters realise.

Luka Vuskovic has been tipped to do great things given his high potential. We did catch a glimpse of that potential in the pre-season, which had the whole fan base excited around him. In fact, many were disappointed when the club sanctioned his loan transfer for the season, given how he showed to have the abilities to come in and start competing at the Premier League level.
But now it is also about Tottenham making this work. When you have a talent like Vuskovic, other young players are also looking at you to see what you make of him and the kind of pathway he gets to first-team football. For the Lilywhites it is about making an example out of them, which can help them go into such meetings with high-profile young players with confidence.
