Tottenham must fend off competition from PL rivals for ‘thriving’ Marseille star available for the right price

Date:

Mason Greenwood is garnering attention from several clubs across Europe including Tottenham Hotspur

Having lost just two of their opening 13 matches in all competitions this season, Tottenham are well on their way to competing on all fronts under Thomas Frank. The Lilywhites are determined to build on last season’s Europa League triumph and have already shown real signs of progress against some challenging Premier League opponents.

Their latest result against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium saw the North London club climb up to third in the Premier League table, giving Spurs a strong platform to build on in the second half of the campaign. Frank’s men have looked solid in all departments, and under the Dane’s guidance, the Lilywhites have become a tough side to beat.

However, to close the gap on their rivals as the season progresses, Tottenham will need to bring in reinforcements during the upcoming transfer window. One major concern that the Lilywhites must address in January is the No. 9 position. Spurs believe they cannot rely solely on Dominic Solanke to provide a consistent attacking threat due to his ongoing injury problems, and it appears the England international is running out of time to convince Frank of his reliability.

That is exactly why the Lilywhites are interested in signing a new striker in the coming months…

Tottenham enter the race for Marseille attacker Mason Greenwood

Recent reports suggest Tottenham are keeping tabs on Olympique Marseille forward Mason Greenwood for a potential January move. The versatile attacker is a key part of Roberto De Zerbi’s squad this season as they look to maintain their charge for Champions League football. The 24-year-old is also enjoying life in France and has quickly become one of the first names on the team-sheet for the Ligue 1 giants.

The England international has certainly made some huge waves at the Orange Velodrome Stadium, bagging 30 goals and providing ten assists in just 38 games for Marseille. He’s one of the brightest talents in Ligue 1 currently, and has started the current season in spectacular form as well, scoring eight goals in all competitions already.

That is exactly why other clubs have also come into the picture for Greenwood’s signature in recent days. As per Ekrem Konur (via X), Aston Villa are also interested in landing the versatile attacker as they look to make a charge for the European spots once again this season. Unai Emery likes what the 24-year-old can bring to his team and wants the Villans to make the move for him in the coming months.

This might just be a blessing in disguise for Spurs. There are no doubts that Mason Greenwood possesses immense talent and has the potential to become a world-class player in the future. But off-field and legal issues that forced him to exit Manchester United in 2024 make it clear that the Lilywhites should steer away from the 24-year-old. Signing the versatile attacker will be met with a lot of scrutiny, and it would also put a strain on the relationship between the club and the fans.

On footballing ability alone, Greenwood would fit perfectly into Spurs’ system as they look to close the gap on their Premier League rivals. However, talent alone is not enough to justify such a move. There are times when character, reputation, and the club’s public image must take precedence. While signing the Englishman would undoubtedly grab headlines, the last thing the Lilywhites need right now is unwanted scrutiny and negative publicity.
