Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a move for Leicester City’s teenage prodigy Jeremy Monga

Tottenham Hotspur have been investing in highly-regarded talent with potential in recent years. It is a strategy that’s been adopted with an eye for the future, especially due to the transfer market becoming inflated. By doing this, Spurs have created a pool of young talent.

The fans witnessed how the Lilywhites brought in the likes of Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray in 2024. Bergvall’s development is a glaring example of how the club wants to go about with signing young players and nurturing their talent. And that is where the interest in one of the hottest Championship prospects comes into picture.

Tottenham keen on Leicester City wonderkid Jeremy Monga

According to TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, Tottenham are among several Premier League clubs interested in recruiting Leicester City’s teenage prodigy, Jeremy Monga. Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle United are all vying for his signature, but it is Manchester City who are currently leading the race.

Manchester City came close to signing Jeremy Monga last summer, but he instead decided to sign scholarship terms with Leicester City. Since then, the 16-year-old winger has been a starter in the Championship, scoring and assisting apiece in 11 appearances. Given he does not turn 17 until next June, the Coventry-born talent cannot sign his first professional deal, and Leicester City would thus be unable to stop him from being lured away.

“Monga is a generational talent. At just 16, he already has more first-team appearances than players like Rio Ngumoha and Max Dowman, who have made huge impacts in the Premier League this season,” Graeme Bailey exclusively told TBR Football.

“But let’s not forget, Monga has already played in the Premier League and previously turned down approaches before signing his scholarship. Interest remains high, and there is a belief that by January he could be ready to make a move.

“Leicester are hoping that giving him regular first-team opportunities will convince him to stay until the summer, when he can sign a professional deal.

“At that point, the club could either sell him or at least secure a fee, rather than risk losing him for minimal compensation.”

Tottenham must strike for Monga in January

Monga became the second-youngest player in Premier League history when he made his debut against Newcastle United in April last season, aged 15 years and 271 days. The winger largely played for Leicester’s Under-18s and Under-23s last term, before breaking into the senior side this campaign. He has been a revelation in the Championship, catching the eye with his lightning-quick feet, dribbling and decisiveness in the final third.

It is understood the Foxes are hoping that an important role in the senior side will convince the England Under-19 international to sign a professional deal next summer when he turns 17. However, there remains a big possibility he could depart the King Power Stadium in January itself, and Tottenham being interested is good news for the fans.

Spurs, aligning with their youth-focused project, could become an ideal destination for Monga. Unlike other suitors, the north London outfit could arguably offer the Leicester wonderkid something unique: a clear role in a growing project under Thomas Frank, who has a proven track record of improving young players.

From a Tottenham perspective, this is the type of opportunity that must not be missed. If Spurs act decisively, they could secure one of England’s future stars and strengthen the squad for both the present and the future.
