Tottenham Hotspur have joined the transfer race for Marseille forward Mason Greenwood
Tottenham Hotspur defied all odds last season by winning the UEFA Europa League and ending their 17-year wait for a major trophy. Now, the responsibility has fallen on the shoulders of Thomas Frank to build on the Europa League success and help Spurs close the gap on their rivals.
The Dane has overseen a positive start to the new season, with the north Londoners climbing to third on the Premier League table on Sunday by beating Everton 3-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. The squad has shown signs of progress and appear unified under Thomas Frank. The 51-year-old has made it clear that he wants his team to compete on all fronts this season. But to make that possible, the Lilywhites will need to reinforce their squad in January.
One of the key areas that has to be addressed without any doubts is the No.9 position. Spurs thought Dominic Solanke could be the player to take over the mantle from the legendary Harry Kane and move forward with the baton. That said, Solanke, who is the club’s record purchase, has not done enough and is currently out. Richarlison has faded after showing early signs of revival under Frank, while loanee Randal Kolo Muani is yet to adjust to the demands of Premier League football.

Tottenham plot shock move for Marseille striker
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Tottenham have joined the transfer race for Marseille striker Mason Greenwood. Barcelona are currently leading the chase, but there is interest from West Ham, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid for the 24-year-old.
Interest in Mason Greenwood is soaring following his rip-roaring start to the season at Marseille. After leaving Manchester United under controversial circumstances back in 2024, the English forward has rebuilt his career in Ligue 1. He was initially sent on loan to Getafe for the 2023/24 season, where he scored eight goals and registered six assists in 33 La Liga games. This led to him then joining Marseille permanently.
Greenwood has become a favourite of the Orange Velodrome faithful, finding the back of the net 30 times and supplying 10 assists in 38 games for Marseille. The versatile forward is in red-hot form and has already scored eight in all competitions this term, including a spectacular four-goal haul against Le Havre earlier this month.
The ex-England international’s remarkable revival at Marseille has ignited a transfer tug-of-war, with Manchester United set to profit from a 50% sell-on clause in any future deal.
Should Spurs go for Greenwood?
Greenwood is a quality forward who has demonstrated during his time at Man United, Getafe and Marseille that can score all kinds of goals. He’d be a good fit in Frank’s system at Spurs, providing goals in abundance as a No.9 whilst operating from wide areas if required. However, after his unceremonious exit from Man United in 2024 following off-field and legal issues, a move back to England would be big news.
There would certainly be backlash if Spurs decided to sign the 24-year-old from Marseille. The Lilywhites, who have undergone several structural changes following Daniel Levy’s departure in September, would not want to sour their relationship with the loyal and passionate supporters by bringing in a controversial player. On talent alone, the former one-cap England international would be a great fit for Spurs, but the stakes are higher here and one wrong decision could lead to severe consequences.
Keeping all the factors in mind and the repercussions a potential deal could attract, we must not pursue Greenwood and move onto other alternative targets to bolster our front-line.
