“Push the boat”- Tottenham backed to address key first XI weakness in January; Middle-East star the solution?

Tottenham Hotspur continue to be linked with Ivan Toney as key January transfer decision awaits

Tottenham Hotspur have faced issues with their attack this season. With Dominic Solanke sidelined with an ankle injury, Richarlison’s inconsistent form, and Randal Kolo Muani struggling to make an impact, Spurs could be in the market to sign a prolific goalscorer come January.

Tottenham were defeated 1-0 by Chelsea in their latest Premier League clash. The game highlighted Tottenham’s attacking struggles as the Lilywhites failed to create chances and only registered a single attempt on target throughout 90 minutes. The acquired RB Leipzing’s Xavi Simons for a staggering £51m transfer fee, but 22-year-old has endured a slow start to life at N17.

Several key attacking players like Dominic Solanke, Dejan Kulusevski, and James Maddison are currently sidelined with injuries. Their eventual return to fitness is expected to resolve many of Spurs’ current attacking issues, though the Lilywhites are still likely to bring in new talent during the winter transfer window.

In October, it was revealed by the club that they had received £100 million capital injection in the form of a new share issue. In light of this, former Everton chief and current football consultancy owner Keith Wyness, believes that the North London outfit will look to sign a striker in January. Speaking to the Inside Track Podcast, (h/t Keith Wyness via Football Insider) he said:

“Spurs have got to do something in that forward situation. I think that’s an area that they have not got right. I’m sure that’s an area that the two sporting directors will be looking at very carefully. And I would expect a move in January, and I’d expect them to push the boat out.”

“They put that £100m back in the club recently and they’ll find a way to get somebody in during January, I think, because the players they’ve got right now are not performing to the level that they need to in front of goal. I do expect Spurs to move and fill this striker position. I think there are three or four of them in the squad currently that have not done it, and they’re going to have to make some moves. We’ll see how that goes in January.

Tottenham to sign former Brentford star?

Tottenham has been strongly linked with former Brentford attacker Ivan Toney. The Bees sold the attacker to Saudi side Al Ahli in 2024 for a fee of £40 million, and brought in Igor Thiago as his replacement.

Toney hit the ground running at Al Ahli, scoring 23 goals in his debut season. He has continued his impressive form this season, finding the net 11 times in 15 appearances.

Tottenham Hotspur continue to be linked with Ivan Toney as key January transfer decision awaits.

Toney has been linked with a potential return to English football. Spurs will be hoping to secure his signature, with the added advantage of reuniting him with Thomas Frank serving as their trump card.
