Tottenham Hotspur join Atletico Madrid in the race to sign Lautaro Rivero from River Plate
According to fresh reports from Argentina, Tottenham Hotspur has joined Atletico Madrid in the race to sign 21-year-old Argentinian centre back Lautaro Rivero from River Plate.
On October 16, Spurs had sent a scout to Argentina to monitor the player in live action. Rivero is currently protected by a €100m release clause in his contract, which extends until 2028. Even though neither club is willing to pay a transfer fee anywhere close to that, Tottenham could have a financial advantage over the Spanish outfit.
Rivero initially climbed the ranks at River Plate, emerging from their youth team. He then spent a loan spell at Central Córdoba before solidifying his place in River Plate’s team. He was called up to the national team due to his impressive display. He has scored 2 goals and provided one assist in the 2025 Apertura season.

Atletico has faced problems in their defense this season. With long-serving center back Jose Maria Gimenez suffering from injuries and Clement Lenglet failing to perform consistently, they are believed to be in the market for a new center back to reinforce their back line. However, they are worried by Tottenham’s interest in the player, as it would cause the player’s market value to increase further.
Known for his maturity on the football field, his technical ability and defensive prowness, Rivero has established himself as an emerging young talent from Argentina. Although the player is currently contracted to the club till 2028, River Plate understand that they may not be able to hold onto their golden boy if Europen clubs come knocking. As per La Razon, Spurs and Atletico Madrid are expected to make an offer for the center back in the near future.
Rivera could possibly lean towards a move to Madrid, due to the presence of fellow countryman Diego Simeone as head coach of Atletico. But at the end of the day, River Plate will likely sell the 21-year-old to the highest bidder.
Lautaro Rivero the missing piece in Spurs defense?
Spurs conceded 65 goals in the Premier League last season, one of the highest tallies in the division. Thomas Frank, who took charge of the club this year, has implemented several adjustments to solidify their defence. The addition of a player like Rivero would provide valuable rotation options and enhance their ability to build play from the back with ease.
