Tottenham star Brennan Johnson must continue building on his performances of late despite being sent off vs Copenhagen
Tottenham secured a convincing victory against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League on Tuesday night. It was a dominant showing from the Lilywhites, who ran out 4-0 winners. The result extended the club’s unbeaten run in the competition this season, taking their tally to eight points from their opening four matches under Thomas Frank.
There were several positives to take from the performance against the Danish side, with Micky van de Ven’s outstanding solo goal drawing the most attention. However, the Spurs supporters were also delighted to see Brennan Johnson seize his opportunity by scoring early in the first half. The Welshman was played through on goal by Xavi Simons in the 19th minute and finished clinically to give Tottenham an early lead.

It proved to be an eventful night for the 24-year-old, as he was later shown a red card for dangerous play in the second half following a challenge on Marcos Lopez. VAR confirmed the referee’s decision, leaving Spurs to play with ten men for the final thirty minutes. Fortunately for the home side, the dismissal did not derail their momentum, and they went on to score twice more before full-time.
Thomas Frank pleased with Brennan Johnson’s performance despite the red card
Brennan Johnson has already etched his name in the Tottenham folklore after scoring the winning goal in the Europa League final last season. The Welshman was the standout player for the Lilywhites last season, scoring 18 goals in all competitions. But it is fair to say that the prolific attacker has not quite managed to make regular impact under Thomas Frank this season, forcing the Dane to drop him from the starting eleven at times.
Even so, Johnson has made his recent opportunities count, including his goal against Copenhagen. Thomas Frank has since praised the forward’s progression and attitude following another encouraging display, despite the red card. Speaking in his post-match presser (via Tottenham Hotspur), Frank said,
“I think he’s started now three in the last four, I think that’s definite steps in the right direction. He played a good game against Everton, okay against Newcastle, just a little rotation for Chelsea, and now starting again. He’s in a good place.”
Frank believes Brennan Johnson is heading in the right direction after putting together a run of positive performances. The Welshman played an important role in Tottenham’s win against Everton in the Premier League, and followed that up with a crucial goal in Europe, setting the tone early in the match.
Johnson may not yet possess every attribute needed to become a world-class winger, but he compensates with excellent movement and sharp anticipation. His ability to find dangerous spaces makes him a valuable asset for Tottenham. With the right guidance and consistent minutes, Thomas Frank will be hopeful that the 24-year-old can continue to develop and play a key role for the Lilywhites this season.
