Former Tottenham defender hails Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven following Spurs’ strong start to the new season under Thomas Frank
There is no denying the fact that Tottenham Hotspur have looked defensively solid and stable under Thomas Frank’s leadership. In contrast to how porous and shaky the defence was last season when Ange Postecoglou was in charge, the north Londoners are learning the art of shutting down their opponents and accumulating clean sheets.
A lot of Tottenham’s early success this season has been down to the partnership of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. The pair have played together for two seasons at N17 and forged a strong understanding at the back. They were unfortunate to spend several months on the sidelines due to injury problems last season, as Spurs leaked goals at an alarming rate and eventually finished a lowly 17th in the table.
Both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have shown signs of regaining their imperious form this term, helping Tottenham keep several opponents at bay, including FC Copenhagen on Tuesday.

Former Tottenham defender hails Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven partnership
TalkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara has labelled Romero and Van de Ven as the best defensive partnership in the world, comparing them with Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk. Echoing such sentiments, former Tottenham defender Paul Miller has hailed the defensive duo, naming them as “standout performers” this season.
“They’ve been outstanding, probably our best two players this season,” Paul Miller said in an exclusive interview with SportsBoom.
“Even when Romero’s been out, Micky has stepped up and been absolutely superb.”
Miller has also shed light on the set-piece threat they bring, especially Van de Ven, who netted two headers in Tottenham’s 3-0 away win over Everton.
“They complement each other so well: Romero brings aggression and leadership, while Van de Ven has incredible pace and composure. Together, they make a solid, fearless partnership that gives the whole team confidence,” he added.
“They’re also a real threat from set pieces, and the more they play together, the better that understanding will become. It’s a fantastic pairing for the club’s future.”

Romero and Van de Ven are the present and future of Tottenham’s backline
When Romero missed a few games due to an adductor strain, Van de Ven captained the Tottenham side. He did well in leading the side, even though results were not up to the mark, which shows Thomas Frank can rely on the Dutchman when Romero is not available.
Truly, the duo complement each other on the pitch. They understand each other’s game perfectly and form one of the strongest partnerships in the Premier League. The north Londoners also look secure while defending when the pair are in the first XI. That said, it is extremely crucial for Frank to keep his defensive pillars fit and firing throughout the season if Spurs are to perform well.
