Kevin Danso discusses new nickname given to him by Spurs manager Thomas Frank
Tottenham center back Kevin Danso has proven himself to be a reliable center back option for Thomas Frank this season. The Lilywhites initially signed the Austrian defender on loan from League 1 outfit Lens in February this year, but made the deal permanent in May for £21 million.
Danso has been impressive in Tottenham’s shirt so far. He played a major role in their Europa League triumph last season and has already made 13 appearances in all competitions this season. He is recognized for his aerial ability, composure under pressure, and leadership. Danso’s best performance for Spurs came against Everton last month, when the Austrian helped keep a clean sheet and recorded 18 clearances in their 3-0 win.

Impressed by his performance, Thomas Frank jokingly gave his center back a new nickname during a press conference after the game. Speaking to the local media, Frank said (h/t club media):
“He deserves praise. Every coach will love him, great character and personality. He was good and calm on the ball. Some strong battles with Beto, from crosses and set pieces he had a magnet head. He did well.”
Danso appeared in an interview with Standard Sport, where he discussed his performance against Everton and laughed about his new nickname:
“I didn’t know until my friends and team-mates told me about [the nickname]. It was a positive, so I’ll take it.”
“When it comes to defending, I’m old school, an old soul. Top defenders are about defending and taking pride in making sure the ball stays as far away from our goal as possible.”
Speaking about his role at the club, Danso said (h/t The Spurs Web):
“Personally, you want to play every game, but you also understand that Micky and Cuti are performing very well. When I get my opportunity, even ten minutes at the end of a game, perform at that same level.”
The Austrian is currently behind Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero in the pecking order, but he seems to be happy with his role at the club. In Tottenham’s current injury-plagued season, Danso serves as a highly reliable backup option to step in when needed.
What does the future hold for Kevin Danso at Spurs?
Kevin Danso’s future at Tottenham Hotspur looks promising as he has quickly established himself as a reliable and commanding centre-back. With his strong defensive abilities and growing experience in the Premier League and European competitions, Spurs view him as a key part of their defensive setup moving forward.
