Tottenham want to sign Vargas

Tottenham keen on Sevilla winger Ruben Vargas

And the North Londoners have been reportedly looking at Sevilla forward Ruben Vargas, who is now emerging as a strong option at N17. There are reports in Spain suggesting that Thomas Frank & Co. hold an ‘intense interest’ in the 27-year-old who has been impressing in La Liga since moving to the Seville-based club from FC Augsburg in January, per journalist Orgullo Biri.

While Tottenham have been quite reliant on Mohammed Kudus for offensive output this season, the Dane head coach is looking to add that blend of energy and end product to the roster, which has moved the Swiss international up the list at Tottenham.

Sevilla are said to be open to considering offers that are around €18m (£15.8m) for the 27-year-old, with the report describing him as a ‘perfect fit’ at Hotspur Way. Vargas is more of a versatile profile who has that ability to play on the right wing or slide into that #10 lane.

Should Tottenham be looking to fortify interest in Vargas?

Tottenham have been decent defensively but are not providing enough reliable chances. A lot of the sharpness in the attack has gone through Mohammed Kudus, which has made it a slightly predictable attack, especially when facing against low blocks. So bringing in someone who is more of a runner that has the capacity to drive, combine, and deliver crosses early can help not only add some dynamism to the threat but also take some pressure off that right channel.

And Vargas fits that bill (at least on paper). He is direct and comes without being an outright risk. Moreover, he is comfortable playing between the lines and brings that quick link play with the pivot and the nine. You can use him to pull markers out and play the last pass as a ten, and given his versatility, Frank can also use him to stretch the pitch.

The report states that Sevilla do not view Vargas as ‘untouchable’ despite his form, and this is where Tottenham can take advantage of the low fee and pounce on him in the winter transfer window without his arrival being a big burden to the transfer kitty.
