“Early stages”- PL rivals open talks with Tottenham target; Will Spurs now push?

Adam Wharton not forcing a move away from Crystal Palace despite strong interest from Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham are looking to bring in a new midfielder as they continue to grow under Thomas Frank this season. The Lilywhites have looked defensively secure since Frank’s arrival at N17, keeping eight clean sheets across all competitions so far. The players appear more organised and understand their roles and responsibilities clearly in every phase of the game.

The next step for Spurs is to strengthen their midfield in the upcoming transfer window. The club is aiming to bring in a new number eight who can operate alongside Joao Palhinha in the centre of the pitch for the second half of the campaign. At present, Rodrigo Bentancur is filling that position, and to his credit, he has performed the role effectively.

However, it is also evident that the Uruguayan midfielder lacks the attacking influence needed in the final third. This is why the club is targeting a player who can carry the ball forward and dictate the tempo of the match while partnering Palhinha in midfield. Tottenham also require greater depth in that area, which makes the signing of a new #8 a priority for January.

Crystal Palace keen to extend Tottenham target Adam Wharton’s contract in the coming weeks

Recent reports suggest that Tottenham have identified Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton as the long-term solution to their midfield needs. The England international has made impressive progress at Selhurst Park, which has encouraged Spurs to monitor his development with a view to making a move in the near future. Thomas Frank is eager to bring the 21-year-old to N17 in January and is prepared to offer him an important role in the squad.

However, Fabrizio Romano now claims that Spurs could miss out on their target as Crystal Palace move to keep hold of him. Speaking on the Market Madness podcast, Romano said,

“They want to extend this contract. So, Palace are on it. They’ve spoken already to his representative several times about this intention they have to give him a new contract. Also, in the recent months, we had many rumours, and the boy, again, is behaving in a fantastic way.”

The journalist added,

“So, Palace are super happy with Adam, and Adam is quite happy with Palace. He understands that he’s probably at the best club to develop in this moment for him. So, at the moment, there is this intention from Palace to give him a new contract, but we are not yet at the stage where we say, okay, it’s guaranteed, because it’s still early stages of the conversation.”

According to Romano, Crystal Palace have already held talks with Adam Wharton’s camp regarding a new contract as they aim to secure his long-term future. The midfielder is also content at Selhurst Park and is open to extending his stay in South London. He believes working under Oliver Glasner is the right step for his career progression at this moment.

This development could come as a setback for Tottenham, who are prepared to offer Wharton regular playing time under Thomas Frank. Spurs may now need to shift their attention to other targets if they hope to reinforce their midfield in the coming months. Recent reports have linked the club with Kobbie Mainoo, as the England international considers his future at Manchester United due to limited playing opportunities.

Only time will tell if the North Londoners actually make a move for a new midfielder in the winter. For now, their main priority should be to turn the fortunes around in the Premier League following a string of poor performances.
