Tottenham Hotspur have been making a name for themselves for the developmental focus that they have been placing on young players. And then there’s the fact that the gaffers at the helm are always the ones who are willing to give these young players a run-in with the first team.
This has seen the Lilywhites faithful have ample young players in their roster, ones with a lot of quality and ability. And among those upcoming stars is a certain Malachi Hardy who has traits that fit quite well into the current defensive scheme of things at N17.
He is not only composed on the ball but also is aggressive going into duels. And then he is adept at organising the defensive line. He does look every inch of a modern centre back that has the leader’s ability baked in early.
Hardy penned down his first professional contract in March 2025, and he has taken big strides since. Moreover, he has also taken strides with the young Three Lions side, having featured at the UEFA U17 EURO Finals this year.
He joined the Lilywhites academy at eight and has progressed quite rapidly into the U18s at Hotspur Way, where he debuted late in the 2023/24 campaign.
And the right-footed centre back has showcased his leadership abilities for England after having captained the Three Lions at the U16 level. He has also continued with England into the U17s/U18s.
Malachi Hardy: The towering yet calm presence at the back
One of the first requirements of a modern centre back is about his ability on the ball. And this is where Hardy is quite composed under pressure. He receives cleanly before opening his body and playing forward with minimal fuss. This is a trait that a lot of managers on the touchline in the English top tier will be desperate to have in their roster. And in the academy we have seen the coaches trust him to start the progression rather than just recycling, showing how they already trust his ability with the ball close to his feet.
And then he is already towering over six feet. The filling frame helps him compete quite decisively when in the air and also be a more authoritative presence in the box. This is something that should come in quite handy given the physical side of the English top tier.
Moreover, he has that poise going into defensive actions. He has this crisp timing of going in for the tackle and then also shows patience to delay the release. And he is constantly looking to help his fullback by covering the space in behind. These are the type of habits that build a defensive line.
But he needs to work on a few things before getting into Frank’s plans
At times he takes a second or two more before releasing between the lines. These types of passes should come more naturally to him given his technical abilities. There also have been sequences where you see him overcommitted into the open channels, where you’d also see him go into it with wrong angles, which is something that needs to be ironed out given how swift the Premier League players are with these small margins.
And while he sees passes, he needs to start looking into the inside channels. This can help his team generate an attacking threat with the offensive-minded players receiving in spaces.
While he has been training with the first team on occasions, he still has some way to go before getting a look-in into Thomas Frank‘s senior setup despite his high potential.
