Tottenham Hotspur could face a significant challenge in their pursuit of Real Madrid star Rodrygo
Tottenham Hotspur have struggled in the attacking third this season, with Thomas Frank’s side facing criticism for their lack of creativity and chance creation up front. Their problems have been compounded by a string of injuries, with key players such as James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke sidelined for extended periods.
Frank is expected to strengthen his side with new recruitments once the January transfer window commences. They have been linked with several attackers, including Ivan Toney, Takefusa Kubo, and Jonathan David. However, Real Madrid’s outcast Rodrygo is understood to be a priority target for the club.
Rodrygo is reportedly unhappy at the club after Xabi Alonso limited his playing time this season. The player is looking for a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu, and the Premier League seems to be a prime destination for the Brazilian.
Spurs were expected to make a club record bid in the region of €80 million for Rodrygo. However, according to Sky Sports, Tottenham’s interest in the winger has been overstated, and the deal is unlikely to occur as the 24-year-old’s wage demands exceed Tottenham’s budget. The winger is contracted to Real Madrid till 2028 and is currently sitting on a handsome package.
Rodrygo has been a great servant to Real Madrid. Since joining the Spanish giants from Brazilian side Santos in 2019, he has registered over 50 goals and 30 assists across all competitions. His pace, agility, dribbling, and passing ability, combined with his consistent goal scoring threat, make him a nightmare for opposition defenders.

Tottenham sold Son Heung-min to the MLS this summer. The South Korean’s absence has been felt in the squad this season, and Spurs have failed to bring in a replacement of similar calibre. The Lilywhites signed 22-year-old wonderkid Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig. However, Simons has yet to hit his stride in N17.
A player like Rodrygo would significantly improve Tottenham’s front line and also allow Thomas Frank to make effective rotations between him, Simons, and Mohammed Kudus.
While Rodrygo may be Tottenham Hotspur’s dream target, a deal appears unlikely unless the player agrees to a significant pay cut. However, that seems improbable, as other Premier League clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester City would likely be willing to offer the Real Madrid star a lucrative package.
