Tottenham Hotspur target Conor Gallagher addresses his position at Atlético Madrid

Tottenham Hotspur are keeping a close eye on Conor Gallagher’s situation, as the midfielder spoke openly about his limited minutes at Atlético Madrid in an interview with Diario AS, as reported by Football España.

He admitted that he is far from satisfied with how often he features and noted that any player in his position would feel the same. Even so, the Englishman said he intends to work hard every day to earn more playing time under Diego Simeone, adding that he still sees his future as being closely tied to the club’s long-term direction.

Moreover, the 25-year-old stated that he enjoys life at Atlético and wants to win silverware with the team, even though he hopes for a more influential role in the coming months. He wants to prove himself whenever Simeone gives him the chance, and Gallagher believes that consistent effort will eventually open the door to regular starts.

“I’m not satisfied. I don’t think anyone will be if they don’t play as much as they would like, but I will continue to work very hard to, whenever I have the opportunity, help the team, and hopefully more opportunities will come to be a starter. “I’m very happy here. My goal is to win titles with Atleti, and I want to have a bigger role in the team. And, as I said, I’m going to continue working to the maximum to play more minutes and be able to help the team.”

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s interest continues to linger in the background, as the links between the club and Gallagher have not faded in recent months. Several Premier League sides are also monitoring his situation, and many observers view Spurs as one of the strongest contenders should circumstances change. Even though Gallagher insists he is not seeking a January exit, the uncertainty surrounding his role naturally keeps the conversation alive.

Why Gallagher fits Spurs’ style and the questions that remain

Spurs would view Gallagher as an excellent fit for a high-energy midfield because of his relentless work rate, sharp reactions, and willingness to press, qualities that suit a team built on aggressive forward play. Thomas Frank’s structure relies heavily on midfielders who win the ball high up the pitch and carry it with intent. Gallagher demonstrated these traits clearly during his spell at Crystal Palace, and he would bring a strong presence to Spurs’ midfield that complements James Maddison’s movement.

Additionally, the 25-year-old’s habit of timing late runs into the penalty area adds balance to attacks that sometimes lack extra runners, making him a useful option in matches where Spurs struggle to break down stubborn opponents. Even so, the club must consider whether he would genuinely improve on Pape Matar Sarr or Lucas Bergvall, who already compete for those positions and continue to develop.

Furthermore, the possibility of a move remains open, as reports have suggested that Spurs held a strong position months ago and were prepared to advance with a bid. Atlético could demand a fee above £52 million, meaning Spurs would need firm conviction before proceeding. Gallagher’s desire to secure his England place ahead of the next World Cup may eventually draw him back to London, but the final decision rests with him.
