Thomas Frank admits £100m reason why Tottenham are nowhere near Arsenal’s league

Thomas Frank has admitted that Tottenham Hotspur cannot match Arsenal’s spending power

Tottenham Hotspur have undergone significant structural changes following September’s removal of Daniel Levy as chairman, with the Lewis family installing a new leadership team designed to expand the business and deliver greater sporting success. However, questions remain over whether Spurs can bridge the financial gap with their North London rivals.

Arsenal, who sit top of the Premier League ahead of Sunday’s derby, demonstrated their ambition when they signed Declan Rice from West Ham for £105 million in 2023. By contrast, Tottenham’s record signing remains Richarlison, who cost £60 million in 2022, a stark illustration of the differing approaches between the two clubs.

Thomas Frank has admitted that Tottenham Hotspur cannot match Arsenal's spending power.

As per The Guardian, Frank was asked whether his predecessor Ange Postecoglou was correct in suggesting last year that Spurs would never spend £100 million on one player. His response was measured but telling. He stated (h/t The Guardian):

“In the next 50 years? Then yes. To build, you need a combination of time and doing the processes. Depending on where the team come from, of course. But to stay up there is still very difficult. So time and process, and, then of course, investment.”

Frank emphasizes smart investment over mega-signings

The Dane acknowledged that sustained success requires financial backing but stressed the importance of intelligent recruitment rather than blockbuster deals, stating:

“If you want success in football, you need to invest in players. Hopefully do it cleverly and we want to do it smart so we don’t invest too much on the wrong players. But you need to invest, £100m, I don’t know. Let’s see. I don’t think we are close to spending £100m, put it that way.”

When pressed on whether Tottenham would need to spend heavily to catch Arsenal, Frank pointed to player development as the key differentiator. He said:

“I’m a big believer that we need to develop the players we have. If you can develop players, not all of them should cost £60m, £70m, £80m, £90m, whatever the amount. I don’t think anybody has done that. Liverpool didn’t do that to get to the top. Even [Manchester] City hasn’t done that.”

Frank continued:

“You need to be good at developing the players, which I believe we are. You also need to invest in the right potential of a player. Declan Rice is a good example. How old was he when he joined Arsenal? Twenty-four or 25? That’s important. Nobody achieves the top without investing.”

Lewis family backing provides optimism

Despite his cautious words about nine-figure signings, Frank expressed confidence that Tottenham’s new ownership will give him the backing he needs to build a competitive squad. Spurs received £100 million from the Lewis family last month, with more funding expected to follow, which will boost Frank’s spending power in upcoming windows. Speaking on the situation, Frank said:

“They definitely said they are all in for the club, that they want to be here for the long term and they want to have success. I’m confident they will back us to do everything we can to build a successful club.”

While Frank’s philosophy prioritizes smart recruitment and development over marquee signings, Sunday’s derby will offer a stark reminder of the chasm that exists between Tottenham’s cautious approach and Arsenal’s willingness to break the bank for proven quality.

It will be interesting to see whether Thomas Frank’s injury-hit side can come away with anything from their trip to the Emirates Stadium.
