Tottenham need to be proactive in the January transfer window and act quick to bring in quality players
Tottenham’s dismal performance against Arsenal exposed several glaring weaknesses that must be addressed in the upcoming transfer window. The Lilywhites were second-best in every department, spending most of the match chasing shadows. Spurs struggled to keep possession, retreated into a deep defensive shape, and failed to put any sustained pressure on Mikel Arteta’s side.
A lack of creativity and cutting edge in the final third has haunted Thomas Frank throughout the season. Despite spending close to £180m on attacking reinforcements in the summer, Tottenham failed to resolve key issues in their forward line. The absence of depth at both centre-forward and left-wing continues to cause significant problems, severely limiting the team’s attacking threat.

The time has now come for the Tottenham hierarchy to back their manager decisively. With the Lewis family injecting £100m into the club, Spurs must invest wisely if they intend to close the gap on their rivals. Reinforcements in attack are essential, and securing a new striker and a new left-winger should be the club’s top priorities.
Tottenham prioritising two positions in January
If Tottenham want to build on last season’s Europa League triumph, they must act proactively in January. There are several clear shortcomings within the squad that need urgent attention under Thomas Frank. However, attracting top-tier attacking players mid-season will require the club to spend heavily, as few teams are willing to part with their best forwards midway through a campaign.
It is now evident which positions Spurs intend to strengthen in the winter window. According to Matt Law (via The Telegraph), Tottenham are prioritising new additions in attack, specifically targeting a left-winger and a centre-forward. These two roles have been identified as essential upgrades for the second half of the season.
The report further states that Spurs are only pursuing players capable of making an immediate impact at N17. They are not interested in rotational options, with the squad already containing plenty of those. Instead, the focus is on bringing in high-calibre signings who can elevate the team’s attacking output and give Frank the tools he needs to build something meaningful at Hotspur Way.
On the left flank, Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo has emerged as a prime target. The Ghana international is open to a move in January, and his £65m release clause gives Spurs an opportunity to strike a straightforward deal. However, they will still need to convince him to choose N17, with several top clubs also pursuing his signature.

Up front, Tottenham are expected to push for Al Ahli striker Ivan Toney to bolster the No. 9 position. The England international is determined to secure a place in the World Cup squad next summer, a motivation that Spurs hope could bring out his best form. His strong relationship with Thomas Frank from their Brentford days would also smooth his transition and help him settle quickly into the Dane’s system.
Will Spurs show any signs of intent in January? Or is it just another false alarm to get the fans back on board? Only time will tell.
