Stefan Borson says 24-year-old defender could become Tottenham’s highest earner under new leadership

Football financial expert feels Micky van de Ven could be the highest paid player at Tottenham under the Lewis Family

Micky van de Ven is enjoying a fantastic season with Tottenham Hotspur, having come back to full fitness and form after an injury-ravaged 2024/25 campaign.

The Dutchman has made significant progress under Thomas Frank, continuing his strong partnership with Cristian Romero at the heart of the Lilywhites’ defence. The duo have been instrumental in helping the team become defensively resilient this season. The 24-year-old memorably scored a goal of the season contender in Tottenham’s 4-0 thrashing of FC Copenhagen at home in the Champions League earlier this month, and with six goals in all competitions, he is also the club’s top scorer.

Given his performances, it is no surprise that Micky van de Ven is attracting interest from several major European clubs ahead of the next transfer window. Real Madrid have been linked with Van de Ven, while former Netherlands international Khalid Boulahrouz has tipped Liverpool to replace their skipper Virgil van Dijk with the Tottenham star.

Tottenham have undergone several changes at boardroom level since the turn of the year. CEO Vinai Venkatesham wants to secure Van de Ven’s future with a new contract. Under Venkatesham, the north London club are planning to offer the defender a new contract to persuade him to remain at White Hart Lane and continue his rapid progress.

Now, former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson feels Tottenham owners could offer Van de Ven an improved deal as part of their ambitions to grow and back boss Thomas Frank, with the Lewis Family taking a more central role at the club following Daniel Levy’s exit in September.

“He could be, especially given the ownership situation,” Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider when asked about whether Van de Ven could become Tottenham’s highest earner.

“I think you’re going to see a change of approach, which can only mean spending more money on wages and signings.

“I think those players that are in the right place at the right time at Spurs are going to see the upside, and he’s a perfect example.”

Van de Ven deserves to get rewarded by the club

Spurs got £100m cash boost from the Lewis Family at the start of October with the intention to spend on signing new players and paying big wages. Under Daniel Levy, the north Londoners maintained a strict wage bill policy, which led to them missing out on several exciting talents across Europe. The Lewis Family wants to ease the wage bill and make significant investments when required.

As far as Van de Ven is concerned, he is arguably Tottenham’s most important player under Frank. He is an asset at both ends of the pitch and Spurs want to keep him without any hesitation amid interest from Real Madrid and Liverpool. Considering his consistent performance levels, leadership skills and upward trajectory in terms of development, the Dutch star deserves to become among the club’s highest paid player alongside Romero.
