Ivan Toney urged to impress with Tottenham Hotspur to secure 2026 World Cup berth
Tottenham shifted their approach in the summer and spent heavily on high-profile names to give Thomas Frank a genuine opportunity to build on last season’s Europa League triumph. The Lilywhites brought in Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons, and Randal Kolo Muani to strengthen their attack and add much-needed depth in the final third. However, there are still a few issues in the attacking department that were left unaddressed.
Chief among these is the failure to sign a prolific goal-scorer. The North Londoners needed a new centre-forward once it became clear that they could not rely on Richarlison and Dominic Solanke. Both players, in different ways, have shown that they are not capable of helping Spurs take the final step and close the gap on their rivals.

The Lilywhites did secure Randal Kolo Muani on a temporary loan on deadline day, but it is clear that the Frenchman is still settling in at N17 and may need time to find his rhythm under Thomas Frank. The lack of reliable options up front has already begun to hurt the Danish manager, with many fans now insisting that Spurs must spend again on attacking reinforcements in January.
Tottenham must go all-in for Al Ahli striker Ivan Toney
Recent reports suggest that Tottenham have identified Ivan Toney as the ideal candidate to lead the line for the second half of the campaign. The Danish tactician is also open to bringing the England international to N17 as the Lilywhites explore ways to strengthen their front line in January. Any deal will depend on whether the 29-year-old is willing to switch leagues again and accept a wage cut to join the North Londoners.
Darren Ambrose, however, has urged Spurs to do everything possible to sign the prolific striker this winter and bolster their attack for the remainder of the season. Speaking on talkSPORT, Ambrose said,
“I think we should honestly go out and get Ivan Toney. I know it’d be a loan deal. Good relationship with Thomas Frank, who knows him really well. World Cup at the end of the year. If he has any ambition to go into the World Cup squad, comes into Spurs, gets us 10 or 15 goals from now to the end of the season, and gets us where we want to be.”
The former Spurs player added,
“It’s a win-win, for us and him really. Because if not, he goes back and earns 600 grand-a-week in Saudi for a couple of years.”
Ambrose wants to see Ivan Toney arrive at N17 on a potential loan deal, arguing that he would be a strong fit due to his previous working relationship with Thomas Frank. He also believes the England international would be highly motivated to impress in North London and go on a goal-scoring run, especially in a World Cup year when he will be pushing for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
As Ambrose rightly suggests, not much can go wrong if Spurs secure Toney in January. The Lilywhites would be signing a proven, prolific striker who would represent an immediate upgrade on both Richarlison and Solanke. And from the player’s perspective, he would still have the option of returning to Saudi Arabia in the summer if the move does not work out, given that it would be a loan deal.
Signing a player of his calibre, if he is genuinely available, should be a straightforward decision for Tottenham. The 29-year-old is entering his peak years and has consistently demonstrated that he possesses the qualities needed to excel in a top league. His clinical finishing, combined with his ability to link up effectively with other attackers, makes him an ideal target for the upcoming transfer window.
