Tottenham want to sign a new midfielder in the upcoming transfer window for the second half of the campaign.
Tottenham need to be proactive in the January transfer market and bring in additional reinforcements for the second half of the campaign. The Lilywhites’ Premier League struggles may force the club to act quickly and secure top-quality players in the coming weeks. The Spurs hierarchy is also prepared to back Thomas Frank by signing players who fit his style and system.
Signing a new midfielder in January should be the top priority for the North Londoners. They urgently require a natural #8 who can operate as a box-to-box midfielder alongside Joao Palhinha in the centre of the pitch. At the moment, Rodrigo Bentancur is filling that role, with Frank asking the Uruguayan to play in a position that is not his strongest.

Despite his composure on the ball, Bentancur lacks the necessary cutting edge in the final third. He provides little creativity and rarely gets on the scoresheet. His slow recovery pace and limited technical sharpness also make it difficult for him to function effectively as a box-to-box midfielder. For this reason, Spurs must bring in a player who can complement Palhinha’s qualities and form a balanced, productive midfield partnership.
Tottenham might be able to land Atletico Madrid star Conor Gallagher
Tottenham are heavily linked with a January move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher. The England international is seen as an ideal fit for the #8 role at N17 under Thomas Frank, with many believing he would form a strong pairing with Joao Palhinha in the heart of the Spurs midfield. Reports also suggest that the 25-year-old is open to leaving after slipping down the pecking order under Diego Simeone.
Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest update on Gallagher’s situation. Speaking on the Men in Blazers Podcast, Romano said:
“I think there is a chance for Conor Gallagher to leave Atletico Madrid already in the January transfer market or in the summer. This will also depend on the formula of the deal. Atletico don’t have any intention of a loan move. I think if a permanent transfer proposal arrives, that could be different. Maybe something around €30m.”
Romano believes Gallagher has a strong chance of leaving Atletico Madrid in the coming weeks if the right offer arrives. The La Liga club are only willing to agree to a permanent transfer, signalling that they are ready to consider bids close to their €30m valuation. A potential loan move appears to be completely off the table.
A good fit for Tottenham?
Gallagher’s drop in minutes at Atletico has also placed his World Cup ambitions at risk. This could make it the ideal time for Spurs to move for the midfielder, who may be eager to prove himself in the second half of the season. He is also believed to be open to returning to the Premier League, and his previous experience with Chelsea would help him settle quickly back into life in London.
He would be an immediate upgrade for Spurs, bringing energy, tenacity, and dynamism to Thomas Frank’s midfield. The Danish manager wants a player capable of covering large areas of the pitch throughout the game, and Gallagher fits that description perfectly.
The 25-year-old influences play at both ends of the field, giving Spurs an extra edge against difficult opponents. Overall, Tottenham must do everything possible to secure Gallagher’s signature this winter.
