Guglielmo Vicario made a costly error in Tottenham’s dismal 2-1 defeat to Fulham on Saturday.
Guglielmo Vicario’s catastrophic error handed Fulham their second goal inside six minutes on Saturday, exposing the goalkeeper’s concerning inconsistency and contributing to Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat at home.
The Italian collected a loose ball near his penalty area under minimal pressure but inexplicably dribbled 25 yards toward the touchline instead of clearing. Instead of booting it out of play, the Italian turned and tried to clear, but slipped as the ball skimmed off Harry Wilson and was controlled by Josh King. Wilson then curled home from 36 metres into an empty net.

Home supporters booed Vicario immediately. Joe Hart, analyzing the incident on Match of the Day, understood their frustration while sympathizing with the goalkeeper’s intentions. He stated (h/t Tottenham News):
“I do understand the fans’ frustration. It’s obviously difficult. I know the role that Vicario is playing. He’s a great team player, and he’s a real leader in the dressing room, but ultimately, you’re going to be judged by your actions and he was heavily involved in what turned out to be the match-winning goal”
“They’re already 1-0 down so the edge is already in the stadium. Now, people will be asking for him to clear it here but this now where you realise, ‘I’m in big trouble, I’ll just knock it out, get my defenders back and I’ll get back in goal’. But he still wants to keep the ball in play and that’s the modern way, the modern-day goalkeeper”
The error devastated Vicario’s goals prevented metric. According to Sofascore, he registered minus 0.92 against Fulham, meaning he conceded nearly one more goal than expected based on shot quality. That single performance slashed his season total from 3.55 to 2.63, losing him ground on Premier League rivals.
Vicario earned a perfect 10/10 rating against Monaco in October’s Champions League fixture. That goalkeeper hasn’t appeared often enough at crucial moments. The version who makes inexplicable decisions under pressure keeps resurfacing at the worst times.
Guglielmo Vicario and his Modern goalkeeping philosophy backfires
Vicario’s commitment to playing out from the back is admirable in principle but catastrophic in execution when decision-making fails. Ten seconds passed between Vicario coming out of his box and Wilson shooting, which was five seconds after the clearance. That extended period with Tottenham’s goal undefended highlighted defensive chaos.
Wilson himself expressed surprise at the opportunity. He stated after the game:
“I was surprised none of the back four went back to the line. When none of them defended the goal, my eyes lit up a bit”.
The entire defensive structure collapsed because Vicario chose ball retention over safety. The Italian’s save count proves he’s busy, often keeping Spurs in matches through individual brilliance. Yet one catastrophic mistake per month negates multiple excellent performances. That inconsistency is unsustainable for a team with top-four ambitions.
Tottenham’s 10th home defeat of 2025 matches their worst calendar year total in club history. Vicario’s error directly contributed to maintaining that shameful record. Thomas Frank needs reliability more than spectacular saves. Until Vicario eliminates these brainfades, Tottenham will continue dropping points at home regardless of attacking improvements.
