Ex-Tottenham midfielder urges Spurs to turn up against Brentford at home

Date:

TalkSPORT pundit wants to see Tottenham turn their fortunes around against Brentford at home after drawing 2-2 with Newcastle United.

Tottenham Hotspur shared the spoils in a frantic 2-2 draw with Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Tuesday night. The pressure was certainly on Thomas Frank coming into the game following three straight defeats.

Spurs required a result against Newcastle United to allow Thomas Frank some respite after coming under heavy scrutiny in recent weeks from pundits, fans and media outlets alike. Fans showed their discontent during the after the Fulham game last weekend, booing the players off the field for their failure to turn up at home yet again.

The Tottenham supporters were dreading ahead of their team’s visit to Newcastle United, and for all the right reasons. In all honestly, Thomas Frank’s side will count themselves lucky to have come away with a point, as Newcastle dominated in every department for large periods of the game.

To be precise, Spurs were just clinical; skipper Cristian Romero emerged as the unlikely hero with a brace- scoring a bullet header and then drawing inspiration from compatriot Lionel Messi to score a fantastic overhead bicycle kick in the 95th-minute to help his team escape Tyneside with a draw.

Danny Murphy urges Tottenham to show up against Brentford at home

Spurs were totally bossed by Newcastle in the first half. They were fortunate to head into half time 0-0, as the Magpies failed to convert their chances. Despite aware of Newcastle being a high-pressing, aggressive side, the Lilywhites kept on playing out from the back and invited pressure.

This one-dimension approach of the visitors did not go down well with former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy. He felt Spurs did not have anything different to offer and the first half display at St James’ Park was a repeat of the Chelsea game. While the English pundit did give Frank’s boys credit for improving in the second half, his eyes are firmly fixated on what they do at home against Brentford at the weekend.

“Newcastle, one of the best teams at home, are pressing you. Okay, you’re going to try and play. Fine. It’s not working. Keep doing it,” Danny Murphy told in a TalkSPORT show.

“I mean, it was a repeat of the Chelsea home game. Anyway, second half they improved and they mixed the game up a bit more and got out there with a point, which is something. But it’s all going to be about what they do at home.”

Tottenham must beat Brentford at any cost

Journalist Alasdair Gold has urged Spurs to stick with Frank, but results need to improve if that is to happen – starting with a win against his former employers Brentford at the weekend. There are real cracks beginning to emerge after the initial honeymoon days at N17, putting the 52-year-old under a lot of pressure. The best way to silence the detractors is by picking up positive results, especially at home.

Brentford will present a formidable challenge at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – a place where the Lilywhites have not won in the league since the opening weekend against newly-promoted Burnley. Spurs must take the onus upon themselves and take the game to Brentford from the first blow of the whistle. Anything other than a win against the Bees would leave Frank in a precarious position.
