Tottenham sit joint-third in the league for this key statistic ahead of Arsenal despite a slow start to the season

Tottenham are among the top five Premier League sides to have scored more goals from open play this season.

The Thomas Frank era at Tottenham Hotspur has been very stop-start. After promising opening months to his tenure, cracks have started surfacing in the team.

The defensive organisation, which was looking Spurs’ strongest suit, is now looking broken. They have conceded 16 goals in last seven games- including 11 in six Premier League fixtures. Thomas Frank’s side are badly struggling for form at the moment, having not won in the Premier League since October 26 when they beat Everton 3-0 away.

Scoring goals has been an issue too, a graver one, in fact. In Dominic Solanke’s injury absence, Richarlison has been Thomas Frank’s main man up top. The Brazilian has been way too inconsistent as usual, but recently scored in three consecutive games in all competitions before firing blanks against Fulham and Newcastle United. Randal Kolo Muani, on a season-long loan from PSG, is still searching for his first Premier League goal.

Tottenham are joint-third for most goals scored from open play in the Premier League

Owing to forwards struggling to supply with goals on a consistent basis, Tottenham defenders have started chipping in with valuable contributions. Micky van de Ven is the top scorer with six goals (including three in the Premier League).

Skipper Cristian Romero was the hero behind Spurs escaping with a point from Newcastle United on Tuesday evening. By scoring braces against Everton and Newcastle, respectively, Van de Ven and Romero have seen off former star Jan Vertonghen’s 2013 record of scoring two goals in one league game.

Now, another interesting stat has come in front of us. Despite enduring a slow start to the season, WhoScored via X has shared that Tottenham are in the top five Premier League teams to have scored more goals from open play this season. Manchester City and Liverpool lead the rankings with 25 and 17 goals, respectively. Spurs are joint-third with Brighton with 15 goals, followed by Chelsea.

The most surprising thing is the absence of league leaders Arsenal’s name in the list. The Gunners have been the best team in England by a country mile this season and hold a five-point lead at the top of the table. They are the second-highest goalscorers in the division behind Manchester City, but when it comes to finding goals from open play, Mikel Arteta’s men do not feature in the top five.

As Spurs are joint-third for this key stat, it shows they are not just reliant on scoring from set-pieces. While Frank has certainly made them a threat from set-plays, the Lilywhites are more than that, unlike Arsenal.

With injured stars like Solanke and Kulusevski expected to return before the end of 2025, Tottenham will find more punch and verve in the final third and get significantly better as a team under Frank.
